Homemade salad dressing recipes

Postby Steph20021 » Mon Aug 27, 2018 4:46 am

Hi everyone,
I’ve been eating a lot more green salads this summer and I am looking for some new inspiration in the kitchen. I mix it up with lots of different toppings but I’ve grown a bit weary of making the same olive oil and balsamic salad dressing every day.
Was wondering if anyone had a favourite homemade salad dressing recipe(s) they cared to share?
Cheers
Steph

Hi Steph,
Yum, salad dressing. Love to make my own! I used to have a recipe for an asian dressing that had mayonnaise and sesame oil. Not sure where I put it, butt it was really good.

Your post has made me nostalgic for it. Found this one. https://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food ... ing-238744. It's not the same since it has no mayo, but the rest of the ingredients look similar and in approximately the right proportions. Think I may try this for dinner this evening, and get back to you.

Another favorite is a greek version of your standard vinaigrette. This one looks tasty. https://www.thekitchn.com/how-to-make-c ... tte-242610.

Best Wishes,

I haven't eaten this salad dressing for more than 20 years until I picked it up in the store the other day -- Green Goddess. I'm not a big lettuce fan, but I love it on sliced cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and sliced onions....and croutons of course. Here's the NYT recipe I found.....or buy in the store (I'm sometimes lazy lol)

Howz about :
fresh sliced peaches, basil, arugula, toasted pecans or almonds, thin sliced sweet red onion, salt pepper to taste, olive oil, balsamic and / or drizzle with Crema Balsamico ( a thick dark or white balsamic reduction with a different depth /layer of flavor from regular balsamic )

to replace the balsamic in other dressings : apple cider vinegar, malt vinegar, red/white wine vinegars
flavored oils ( herbs, fruit etc. ), lemon juice or lime juice for the acid ?

gotta go
dinner is calling me !!!

Hey peanut, let me know if you try it what you think! I’m going to try both of these out. Thank you!

AndreTexas,Green goddess is like a thing! I recall my friend ordered a salad in a restaurant once and one of the choices for dressing was green goddess. Never thought of making it and I’ve yet to try it. Thanks for the suggestion!

Steph, you've got me busy meal planning, and finalizing my grocery list. Lots of salads this week!

I've made this roasted beet, arugula and goat cheese salad, and love it. Might not be to everyone's taste however. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina ... pe-2006690

A tasty wedge salad sounds good with something grilled. Maybe a steak or pork chop. Haven't tried this one, butt it's on my list. https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/268 ... e-dressing

Still promising to report back.

CR, Oops chemo brain! Correction made abive! I saw your name funny enough but don’t recall reading your actual suggestion. I must have fallen asleep on the sofa! No, not because you were boring me! Now I am going to go back and actually read yours. And unless it has anchovies in it I’ll be trying it. I never used to use my kitchen much, but more and more I find myself experimenting with different flavours, ingredients and recipes.

I’ve also started to put together a pretty recipe tin of all of my favourite recipes my mom made over the years and as a kid. I will then self laminate them as a keepsake for my wife.

Since my mom has lost most of her sight due to sepsis a couple years back, as a project, I am typing up all her recipes and will give either a hard copy or digital version family recipe book to each of my brothers and their wives. Then we can make moms favourites for her, or read them aloud. Unfortunately cooking isn’t the same for mom anymore now that it’s such a struggle and chore for her.

Kudos to you, I have such difficulty meal planning. I’ll do it for one week and then I get side tracked or off schedule and don’t do it the next week, or my wife will grab groceries before I get my meal planning done and it throws everything off schedule!

I love beets and goat cheese but dislike arugula. I’ll try it with mixed greens instead!

Blue cheese is not my thing. Too old and stinky and blue! Heheh But I can’t view the second link anyway, after I tell the NYtimes website i don’t want to subscribe, it forces me to click a link that says no thanks take me to the homepage and it loads what I think is the homepage, and not the direct link of course. I’m sure I could figure it out , but , blue cheese...

Omg I love tacos haha, mmm...

Thanks stewsbetty, I’ll add this one to the list! Powdered ranch is harder for me to find for some reason, i know I’ve seen it at Costco but who needs that much ranch powder!? I guess maybe in the grocery store it’s kept with the dry packets of gravies and hollandaise sauce etc?

That is where I found it at my grocery store. I love tacos too! Maybe that should be my supper tonight. :)

I use a six-ingredient mnemonic for vinaigrettes: oil and vinegar, salt and pepper, sugar and spice.

Any kind of vinegar, or lemon juice, or lilikoi (passionfruit) or other sour juice. Or a mix of two or three.
Sugar, honey, or artificial sweetener.
Dill or basil are my favorite herbs for the spice part. Ginger and garlic are good too.
Fresh ground pepper and sea salt, or whatever's in the shaker
Shake or blend them all together, then add an equal amount of...
olive or coconut or walnut or canola oil, or...

Never the same twice, but always fresh and tasty.
I am not my disease.
