Surgery Tomorrow - 27th New Zealand Time

Postby SteveNZ » Sat Aug 25, 2018 5:08 pm

Although the radiation removed the tumour, due to other factors (swollen tissue, inflamed polyps forming around area and swollen lymph nodes) my surgeon recommended we do not 'wait and see'. In this case the risk is just too high that cancer cells are in surrounding tissue. I do trust they guy and the medical team of specialists who work together in decision making.

So tomorrow is basic resection and it depends on what he finds as to how much is removed. :( :D
Being so close to the anus this may be nasty and the radiation caused a fair bit of damage low down.

My whole church and friends are praying which I know helps heaps. :) :)

I HATE NEEDLES - Especially when the chap/chapess steers at the blade a bit before the jab. I always wonder what they are thinking?
Aged 56 - I feel really young...
Colo-Rectal Cancer T2 N1 M0
March 2018 - Diagnosis
April-May 2018 Radiation+Chemo then a TIA (Minor Stroke). - Stopped Chemo.
August 27th-November 2018 - Surgery and long, long recovery
*Decided to live to 100 as I will get a telegram from Her Majesty the Queen when 100yrs old. I so, so want one.
Am a Salvation Army chap so I complete 'knee drill' (prayer) to the Commander in Chief often. For myself personally this helps me through.

Good luck tomorrow. I will be thinking and praying for you. Remember to walk, walk, walk, those hospital halls. Post when you can.

Regarding needles, I've had sooooo many I don't even think about it anymore. I just can not watch them put the needle in. Remember to drink a lot of water today. It really can help make the needle going into your vain easier.

Again, good luck tomorrow.

Good luck tomorrow. We'll be praying for you.

Also, after surgery, be sure to be very careful with your surgical incisions so as to avoid triggering an incisional hernia:

Hello, this is Susie, Steve's wife. He wanted me to let you know how the surgery went and how he is feeling now.

The surgery was 4 hours and he was in recovery over 3 hours. The doctor did a lot of work on him, he now has a stoma. Visually, the doctor does not think there is any more cancer in any cells, but the path report will tell the true story.

The first night, he was in an "Intermediate care" ward, then, the next day (yesterday), he was moved to a regular room. He has walked a few times with the physio. He is in lots of pain however, he is on a Fentanyl drip via the PCA machine, and IV's of Paracetamol. He is experiencing lots of nauseous feelings and vomited a few times last night. They have inserted a Naso-gastric tube in his nose to drain off the contents of his tummy as it is very distended. It seems that it is fairly common to have "Ileus" where the bowels go to sleep and won't work, thus the pains and nauseated feeling. He will have it in for a couple of days. He hasn't been able to eat much at all.

The surgeon did a lovely job on his stoma, it is fairly small in size, he said there was just no way he could reconnect due to the fact it was so low and so "fried" from the radiation.

Steve will probably write you folks when he is more alert and feels better.

Susie, Thank you for the update. Have been thinking about him

Remind him, Stoma's are a good thing. I've had one for 14 years now. It does NOT hold me back. If anything it gave me my life back after radiation did it's job.

Remind him to walk, walk, walk, those hospital halls.

Praying for a speedy recovery,

Lee

Thank you for the update. I was in ICU for 3 days (they had a/c there) before they moved me to a regular unairconditioned room. Yes, walking was key and trying to sit on a chair in 1/2 hour increments. About 5 days later I had tons of fecal matter come out down my legs. What a mess. They told me this was normal after getting a stoma...the last bits so to say. So maybe he will want a depends or mat on the bed. I was so shocked and upset, but if I had known ahead of time it would not have been such a surprise.
