30 y/o 6 polyps

Postby E17 » Wed Aug 01, 2018 3:36 pm

Hi Everyone,

First post. I’m 30 years old and visited a GI for some bleeding. Colonoscopy found 6 polyps (4 sessile serrated adenoma in the ascending colon, 1 sessile serrated adenoma in the descending colon and 1 rectal tubular adenoma). GI suggests coming back in a year or two for another colonoscopy. I took Color.com test and it did not show any abnormalities for the genes tested. My parents each had one polyp found by routine screening in their 50s.

I am wondering if you had any suggestions for next steps. Should I get a second opinion, perhaps follow up with a more specialiazed GI, etc?

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I am glad you got tested as you had precancerous polyps.

You could have testing done for genetic FAP in which case you should have colonoscopies yearly and be monitored by a good GI doctor.

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant inherited condition in which numerous adenomatous polyps form mainly in the epithelium of the large intestine. While these polyps start out benign, malignant transformation into colon cancer occurs when they are left untreated.

Thanks Chrissy! Do you suggest using a GI in an Academic setting or private practice?

I am trying to stay ahead of future problems. Again, all suggestions are appreciated.

I had my colonoscopies done at a local hospital and the GI doctor was excellent. He was voted best doctor in our state in the past. Last year, he was hired by a regional hospital as the Chief Medical Officer. He was not working at a teaching hospital.

My GI surgeon who will likely do my colonoscopies in the future, is at a teaching hospital and I'm perfectly fine with her doing them as well.

I look at qualifications and recommendations on doctors. The setting may or may not be a big factor.
