Blocked throat

Postby dliu » Sun Jul 29, 2018 4:04 am

Apologies if this has been discussed already - I had a look but couldn't find it.

My mum is on her 4th folfox + avastin cycle and on her third day she noticed her throat was very blocked - she had difficulty swallowing food or water. Today, she almost chocked on a pill. Her oncologist is away on holiday til mid August so we were wondering what it could be, whether it could be an allergic reaction, if anyone on this forum has experienced it and, if so, how did you combat it.

Thank you so much!

Hi ,
I would phone your hospital just to get it checked out .
My mum had a thing called spasm of the larynx. It happened just after her infusion and despite her airways being wide open she felt as though she was choking. Panic was setting in but my husband was walking through the door to take her home , happens to work in that field , and reassured her the airways were still wide open it was just a sesnsation . She used to take a glass of slightly warm water till it subsided .
Given it’s her airways get her checked out and hopefully reassure her . If it’s a reaction they will want to know about it so they can add extra meds to counteract it . Please don’t sit on it it’s always better to get it assessed .
It’s easily treated so hope that helps ,

It happened to me on my first cycle nearly straight away after infusion and got progressively worse the next few days, apparently it is not a side effect ( which I assumed) but is an allergic reaction as previously said, so my oncologist refused to infuse oxi on round 2 and just gave lucovourin and 5fu this time till he comes up with another cocktail thus Tuesday,,,,
Apparently it can happen at any time
Deffinatly consult a doctor

Thank you all for your replies. We manged to get through to the oncologist who said the blocked throat on Monday might have been due to the oxi but doubts it would be an allergic reaction this late on. However, he recommended to take some cortisone pills for the next 3 days as a safety measure.

We're skipping one week of chemo (overdue vacation 8) but we'll be seeing him on the 14th so he'll be able to advise further. I just hope this doesn't happen again. This cycle has been very tough because of some very painful mouth sores and things were just beginning to look up!

I had same thing, any air blowing in, around me made it worse. It felt like a softball in my throat, pills felt like they were sticking in esophagus. I found a heating pad helped but it didn't go away completely until I stopped taking mess. About ten days off last dose, Yippee, and no more issues with that. Mouth and tongue also felt strange.
