HELP.....Oxaliplatin allergy

Postby Eleda » Tue Jul 24, 2018 4:47 am

I'm having my second infusion of FOLFOX and because of my bad reaction to the throat sensation they have decided that I'm allergic to oxliplatin and only giving 5FU today and not willing to try oxliplatin again because of fear of anaflectic reaction,,,,
I could just about cry but in n a room full of other people getting chemo,,,,
I e begged to b admitted as an inpatient to try again but they said it's too dangerous,,,
I'm sorry I told them about my symptoms now
What am I going to do now????
They say it's life threatening if they give it
I say it is if they don't,,, I'm only 47 with three small kids, I wanted to go at this hard,,and now I feel I am reducing my chances because I had lymph node invoment

So sorry to hear that but I think they are right not to continue with oxaliplatin. My mum had similar allergic syndrome on her 10th chemo of folfox. It is life threatening.

It is difficult to accept stopping folfox at once, but it is more important to ask for aggressive treatments other than folfox. I think Folfiri is another common chemo combination replacing folfox. Don’t give up. Prayers to you and your family.

I had the allergic reaction to Oxaliplatin at my 5th or 6th infusion. They finished that infusion with just 5FU, Leucovorin, and Avastin. The remaining cycles were with Folfiri. The way my oncologist explained it, the 5FU does 90% of the work. The Oxaliplatin or Leucovorin only helps a little bit.

Thanks guys
I'm still on FLUOROURACIL pump and leucovorin)
But I feel like my holy grail of drug has been pull from under me, I I'm just will to put up with anything for the best chance of a good outcome, Which I know dying of anaphylaxis is obviously stupid but I think it's a reaction to the drug ( side effect) and not an allergic reaction

My husband developed an allergy to oxaliplatin. The oncologist gave him IV Benadryl and he was able to continue all 12 cycles, last 2 were reduced due to neuropathy. He slept the whole time, and was not permitted to drive himself home, but that worked for him.

I've just read a protocol for desensitizing to oxliplatin so I'm hoping he'll go for it, and add in the antihistamines prior,,, I really want to do this so I'll try anything and deffinatly suggest the benadryl thanks
I was planning on taking my CBD and sleeping through this round because I knew what to expect

I'm still hopeful,, I'll know next week after my meeting with the oncologist, and my next session was put off for an extra week because the appointmenta aren't available in two weeks time ( such bullshit) I'm annoyed at everything ATM lol
Thanks again for all the replys
