15 Months Post LAR - fluid and 2 lung nodules

Postby scohow66 » Mon Jul 23, 2018 3:14 pm

Hi - had first annual scans after LAR and reversal. Small fluid collection identified which may mean some leakage at connection site, but not having any issues (fever, pain, etc.). Dr. is suggesting I watch and wait...go antibiotics route if problems occur. I guess its common with very low tumors to have some issues with the connection, but hoping it stays under control. In addition, two small nodes identified on lung (2 mm and 4 mm). Dr. suggestion rescan in 4 months to see if change. I am a little freaked out, but realize these may have been missed previously or could be benign. I was a T2N0M0, pre LAR chemo/rad which eliminated the tumor. Final dx was T0M0N0. Still concerned about the nodes so interested in any feedback or advice...tough to now sit and wait 4 months!

I also had a 4mm lung nodule show up one year after treatment. I had repeat scans at 3 months, 6 months after that, at one year after the first scan. All scans showed no change in the nodule. Although, we will continue to watch the radiologist attributed the nodule to fibrosis or inflammation in the last scan. I will have another scan in November so we will see. The doctor said the nodule is too small to biopsy or for a pet scan to pick up. It would have to double in size in order to be able to do either of these. Nodules can be caused by many things, but I understand your worry. I was worried as well, but have begun to worry less as there has been no change in a year. Caner does tend to grow fast, so it is my understanding that if there is no growth in 2 years, nodules are considered benign. Since we are being monitored regularly if anything does come up it will be caught early. I know it's hard but all you can do is wait to see if there are any changes in subsequent scans.

Did you have a clear thoracic scan before?

I also had a 2 mm node show up on a scan 2 wks ago, but it was my first thoracic scan, so it might have been there forever; since my childhood pneumonia, for example. My oncologist said that the best interventional radiologist couldn't hit something that small for a biopsy, and the only thing to do is keep an eye on it going forward. He thinks the chances are very good that it is benign.

According to what I read, lung nodules are found on about 50% of thoracic scans, and about 90% of those found are harmless.

A coworker's wife was scheduled to have a biopsy to look at a lung nodule that showed up and they were worried that it was cancer. Her husband remembered that she had had pneumonia (or some other infection) in the past year and one of the doctors thought that that might be the cause. So they waited instead of doing the biopsy and there was no growth.

Funny you mentioned that. My mom also had something show up on lung and it freaked me out. It was due to bronchitis or pneumonia. (scar) still it's scary to hear that.
