Advice on wife's diagnosis

Postby Al2000 » Sun Jul 22, 2018 3:02 am

Hi everyone

I was hoping you guys could give me a idea of the description of my wife's rectal cancer diagnosis below please.

She is 44 years old.

Findings
Firm lesion with central depression at 3 cms extending to 7cms from the anal orifice. Rest of the colonic examination was normal.

She is getting mri & ct scan soon.

Thank you
Al

Hi Al,

Sorry you and your wife have to go through this. There isn’t enough info yet to give it a stage. You will need to know how far the tumor has invaded the wall of the rectum. In addition you will need to know if it has spread to any lymph nodes and/or distant organs.

The scans should help determine Node and other organ involvement. I am assuming she had a colonoscopy. If so they should have taken a biopsy which will determine how far into the wall it goes.

Good luck and let us know what you find out. Lots of knowledgeable folks here.

She also pretty young for this kind of cancer ,so I hope they are going to do genetic testing. Does anybody in her family have or had this kind of cancer?

Thank you for your kind words of support.

She has got family that have suffered with the same cancer.

Her dad 65 years did not go to the doctors until the lesion was out of his rectum hole and ruptured.
( He has a bag and still going well.)

Her Auntie also suffered the same cancer at similar age, which we have minimal info on as she does not keep in touch much due to family breakup.
( Not sure of procedure for this lady )

At the moment my wife's sister 33 and brother 46 will be contacted as they have already got diabetic complications also.

Appreciate your support
Stay well
Al

I would try to get as much biological information as possible this week to get ahead of the curve.

Some extra bloodwork can pay dividends for a long time and improve decisions now. My view is to pay cash, pick up the phone to simply do it (y)ourselves, call a lab, and get it done without any arguments over (sub)"standard of care" or insurance-that-mostly-doesn't-pay, over small money. Once chemo and/or radiation treatments start, a lot of biological information is destroyed or munged.

The big decision next week would be whether to get some genetic testing done sooner than later.
watchful, active researcher and caregiver for stage IVb/c CC. surgeries 4/10 sigmoid etc & 5/11 para-aortic LN cluster; 8 yrs immuno-Chemo for mCRC; now no chemo
most of 2010 Life Extension recommendations and possibilities + more, some (much) higher, peaking ~2011-12, taper chemo to almost nothing mid 2018, IV C-->2021. Now supplements
