Bone biopsy experiences? Update-done, kinda

Postby CLD » Mon Jul 16, 2018 10:33 am

Hello all. If anyone here has been through a bone biopsy, I would appreciate it if you could share your experience. DH will have T11(spine) and his femur biopsied on Friday. I believe they will take a piece of the actual bone, not just the marrow??? How was recovery time? It seems like a pretty big deal as they told DH to expect to remain in the hospital 6+ hours and to not do anything all weekend. I'm especially worried about the back biopsy as he had crushed T12 in an accident a few years back. Follow up for results scheduled with his oncologist July 27. Thank you in advance.

We arrived bright and early for DH biopsy at our local hospital. The Interventional Radiologist stated that he did not feel the bones were cancer at all. He said what they were but I forget the word. So that was a relief. He was still going to biopsy T11, but after an hour, the nurse came out and told me he biopsied the lymph nodes instead. These are the same nodes the office nurse I had been dealing with told me no Dr she could think of would *touch these* (even at nearby UPMC Hillman Center)as they were too close to aorta. And he did it without major surgery or even breaking a sweat. He said his PET scan looked good and if he had no prior cancer history, there would be no cause for concern. So I'm both happy and terrified that they were able to biopsy the node (which was 8mm, btw). The node would be the game changer and now we will get a real, definitive answer. So, another week of being on pins and needles, and praying for a cancer free outcome. Also, as a note for current and future readers of this post, as proof that things can light up on PET that are not cancer.

My H had prostate cancer, and at some point had a PET scan that lit up in his hipbone/joint. Needless to say, it was not a met of his prostate cancer, but inflamation/arthritic changes. He has since had a hip replacement. :)

I'm glad this radiologist is able to help your H.
