radiation therapy & bleeding

Postby Rectal-AL » Thu May 17, 2018 12:24 pm

Hello
Am new to the forum & my grammar insist the best

I was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer(its mostly in my rectum) in early April. Am the process of under going chemotherapy & radiation

I just finished day 22 of 28 day radiation,am starting to bleed a lot now when I poop(It drips out) & have the whole ring of fire thing going on as well. My Doc says the bleeding is normal as the tumor is aggravated now.

What I fine weird is early on I had bleeding & it went away. So I thought the tumor was shrinking & drying up

My worst fear is the bleeding is not the tumor, but what is left of rectum being burnt up

What does everyone think?

I was diagnosed 3B and had the 28 days of radiation and I don't recall blood coming out but there were tumor flakes that came out and they had blood spots on them. I would guess that was an attachment point to the overall tumor. After Neo-Adjuvant Chemo and Radiation, I had surgery and they removed the rectum; I don't know whether or not the plan is similar for you or if you're doing the new Total Neo-Adjuvant Therapy approach. I did have some leaking in the last three weeks and I don't really know if that was blood or fecal stuff. I wore Depends Shields to catch the stuff. The radiation made holes back there and I suppose stuff could have leaked through the holes.

I had some rectal bleeding when pooping. Talk with your radiooncologist. Mine said that the rad will cause irritation and blood could occur when pooping. He did not think it was a big deal unless significant blood loss occurs when not pooping. His definition of significant was-was it enough to worry about. Umm OK.

Thanks

Hi Rectal-AL I am about 2/3 of the way through my radiation and feel for you.
Man it can be painful........ :(
For myself the 'burn't' anus is pretty blistered-swollen (the inside will be similar) and there is this bleeding and muck as a result. My specialist advises it is not out of place for my treatment, due to the location/size of the tumour.

The reason for radiation is to break up the tumor. I was bleeding a little before diagnosis, so looking at blood saved my life . I was told there would be 25 days of radiation, and when I reached that point, I received the bump . The last 3 treatments target the tumor directly, and that is when you might see large masses of cartilage eject . After that you get a break, but I would still highly recommend more chemo. I haven't had a treatment in 6 years .
