Ten years and I missed it!

Hi everybody,

Yesterday marks ten years since I was first diagnosed with cancer on May, 8th 2008. How did I miss that?! I had surgery on May 15th 2008, followed by six months of FOLFOX chemo. I've been incredibly fortunate to still be here and to have never had a recurrence. Sometimes I ask the "why me"? question (why did I survive when we have lost so many others?), but mostly I just go on with life and try to enjoy it. I'm still at the same job. My six year old is now sixteen! I just signed up to volunteer for a cat rescue a few hours a week. Life has its ups and downs, but I feel grateful today to still be in the game.

Blessings to all of you. I only stop in here now and then these days, but I came here right away when I remembered my anniversary. I guess I feel a little guilty for posting when so many of us are struggling, but on the other hand, maybe I can offer a little hope. I was not diagnosed at stage 4, but I was 3c with "prognostic factors" in the toilet. I had a huge tumor, 14 positive lymph nodes and "signet ring cell" cancer. I even had some suspicious para-aortic nodes. They were not suspicious about them until they shrunk during chemo. Thanks goodness they never showed up again.

Take care, wishing you all the best! Sending love,

Dori

I'm so happy for you! I just passed my 6 year mark and I look forward to missing one. Good to hear from survivors.

G'day Dori,
Good to see you still going. Survival is not always easy but for some of us it just happens. I remember when you came on board and you always wonder when you haven't seen someone for a while . I am really glad you got to see your little boy grow up. I reached 20 years in Jan. It seems like a hundred but I'm still hanging in. Hugs to you and your family . Ron.

I love seeing long term NED peep posting.

You all give us hope to be a part of that group.

Congratulations! :D

That’s fantastic! I too just passed 8 years of being diagnosed in April. I rarely come on here anymore, but’s that’s because my husband suffered a massive stroke 3 years ago. I am now his full time caregiver. Cancer was a breeze compared to what he’s going through. My yearly check up is next week. Praying I’m still NED. There is hope for all you newbies here.

Congrats!!!

I'm also 10 years this past November. There are some good stories out there, and yes, it is emotionally hard to stay active on this Board during longer periods of NED (I'm 3.5 years NED)....but wow, has it helped me during the rough years!

Keep on keeping on...

Rob

Thanks for checking in with such encouraging news. Its always good to see old timers log in again, especially when they have good news to report.

You were here before my time on this forum. Your last post as Dori was a month before my first post as O Stoma Mia, so our paths never crossed. But you left a legacy of over 400 messages on this forum. Anyone can view these old messages, even now. No one has lost access to them. These messages are here forever. They are located here:

Your story is a particularly important one, since you were diagnosed with Signet Ring Cell carcinoma -- a type of CRC with a rather dire prognosis. You defied the odds, and people need to know about that. They need to know that there is still hope, even when the odds are stacked against you.
