Surgery Completed

Hello All,

I have not posted in a while and wanted to give everyone an updated. I had my TME/Live resection done April 3rd. It was rough waking up and a bit painful, but controllable. Getting up for the walks were tough but again tolerable especially with my pain button right there hands away.

I have my temp ileostomy so that will be something I need to work on changing and getting used to but not so bad.

Now I am nervous about the staple removals. If it isn't one thing its another to worry about.

My surgery was suppose to be laparoscopic but the liver resection unfortunately couldn't even though they said they would try. So ofc I had a bigger cut there in that area across my abdomen, which is the most painful of all the cuts.

Healing up and getting better. Staples removal scared. let me know your experience with the staple removal, nervous mostly about belly button area.

Glad you got your surgery - one step down.

I went into the Doctor's Office two weeks after surgery and she pulled them out in an examination room with what were essential pliers. I do not recall much pain in the process - maybe a little tickling.

Can't comment on the staples as I never had them, but hope the healing goes well and you have a smooth ride from here.

I also had my staples removed by my surgeon a couple weeks after surgery and it was no big deal, I barely felt it. I was glad to get them out because they were bothering me. Congrats on being done and swift healing!

I had a lot of staples including in the belly button area. I am such a baby about those things! I was due to have the staples removed the week that my surgeon was on vacation and I would have had to wait an extra week. My daughter is an ICU nurse and has removed staples before. She spoke with the surgeon about it and he gave her the OK to remove the staples. Even gave her a new (sterile) remover and some steri-strips. I whimpered like a baby when she started the process (I think she was a bit offended) but I didn't feel a thing other than a little tugging and tickling!!!! Totally painless. Piece of cake.
My surgeon also attempted laparoscopic colon resection but due to scar tissue from a C-Section had to open me all the way up. The small incision area where they tried laparoscopic hurt much worse than the large resection incision.

Can't speak to staples, my stitches dissolved. The incision was a surprise but by 8 weeks doing ab work at yoga. Scar is already disappearing. I agree Ileostomy isn't
that bad. I can eat whatever I want now with a lot of chewing. Some foods like spinach, chard and raisins really don't digest.

It amazes me how quickly we adjust to all these changes. Congrats on being through the surgery.

I had 30 staples the first time and 20 the second (just more distance between them) and it was absolutely not painful to remove them after 9 days.

22 staples over 5 sites; 2 staples were inside my belly button.
Staples were removed at my family doctor's office by the nurse once my doctor had assessed the incisions.
I forgot to bring the removal device they gave me at the hospital, but the office had them as well.
It took about about 10 minutes to remove all of them.
While not painful it was an uncomfortable feeling each time one was plucked. The ones in the belly button did not feel any worse than any of the others.
Hope all goes well for you.

This Tuesday will be 3 weeks out from surgery. Feeling better a little pain around ileostomy but tolerable and not bad.

Tomorrow is staples removal day. I am so nervous, especially for the belly button area. I am going to probably pop an oxycodone. Also I am still draining on the big cut where I had my liver resection. Is this normal. The nurses says it is and I was wondering how long others drained for before it stops. I know I am only 3 weeks out from surgery so maybe 6-9 weeks?

Well Staples removed on Monday and I was nervous for every single one that was pulled some did sting a little, but really not bad at all.

Also did what is called a Flouroscopy with Enema, where they stick a flexible tube up your butt and spray enema to test leakage. That wasn't to bad either but not fun.

Next step, tomorrow meet with Chemo doctor to decide if more chemo needed I will also get my biopsy results from everything they took out of me during surgery. I hope no more Chemo and all is clear!!
