Fertility Post FOLFOX

Postby LFlorence » Sat Apr 07, 2018 3:40 pm

Hi all! I’m new to this page and have never been on a forum like this before. I wanted to ask some questions and thought that this may be the best place. My husband is 40, Dx stage 3C mucinous colorectal Ca in January/18 (T4A N2B - 8 out of 27 nodes). Sigmoidectomy January/18, FOLFOX March/18 ongoing. We froze a sample of sperm post surgery pre chemo but the count was low and motility 2%. Wondering if anyone has experience with male fertility post FOLFOX, and how long after FOLFOX ends that is required to wait before conceiving? Of course that would all be pending a clear CT scan in six months, when FOLFOX is finished. That is of ultimate importance to us currently, and information on mucinous colon ca is not as plentiful as it is on the other types from what I have been finding/reading. Thanks!

Hi! Thanks so much for the message! I cannot figure out how to private message you back and when I try to compose a message it says I haven’t posted enough yet on the page to do that. :(

I was told to wait 2 years post chemo/radiation before attempting to conceive. However, it took around 3 years for my counts to come back to normal. They were ZERO for over a year after treatment ended. FYI, we conceived a baby around year 4.
Dx 12/11 rectal stage IV w/ 6 mets to liver, age 35
4 cycles FOLFOX 12/11 to 2/12
short course radiation 2/12
rectal/liver resection 3/12, temp ileostomy
8 cycles FOLFOX/FOLFIRI 4/12 to 8/12
ileostomy reversal 10/12
port out 10/13
1/17: Added daughter to family!
12/19: Added son to family!
NED for 11+ years and counting!

My oncologist also said the limited number of studies on the subject said wait 2 years. He said waiting one year was probably good enough. My wife didn't want to wait the full year. So she got pregnant 7 months after I had stopped chemo. I was worried to death during the checkups about any abnormalities with our child. So far we've been lucky that our daughter has been healthy.

I also sperm banked prior to starting chemo but never tapped into this "reserve".
