Blocked colon perforation, what chemo to choose?

Postby monicafcp » Tue Mar 27, 2018 8:54 pm

Hi all,

My father has just been dx'ed Stage IV colon cancer (details on signature).

We are looking into 1st line treatments, but doctors have diverging opinions:

one says "take FOLFOX, as FOLFIRI gives you increased toxicity due to anatomical alteration of intestinal tract" (I wonder: could this in any way affect the blocked perforation??)

the other says "take FOLFIRI, as FOLFOX can give you permanent neuropathy fuelled by pre-diabetes" (Is this a real thing? - he doesn't even have any pre-diabetes induced neuropathy now)

If the blocked perforation opens, he has to have emergency surgery and risks sepsis.

Anyone has some info to share on this?

Thank you in advance,
Colon cancer - left
Dx Stage IV 03/18
Mets urinary bladder, lungs, liver, prostate, lymph nodes, thyroid

Asymptomatic pre-diabetes 111

Hi Monica,

Welcome and sorry that your father's diagnosis brought you here. I don't know enough to comment about one treatment over another. Every patient is different and responds differently to chemo cocktails.

I have never heard of a blocked colon perforation. I thought all perforations had to be repaired and treated vigorously with antibiotics to prevent sepsis.

I hope some other members with far more knowledge will have answers to your questions.

Wishing your father and you the very best as you battle this disease
