Surgery for precancerous sessile growth

Postby tjhilliard » Tue Mar 20, 2018 10:10 pm

About three years ago, my doctor found some precancerous cells ln the upper part of the large intestine near the cecum. He cut them out then and has done colonoscopy with removal every year for a total of three times. They always show up. Now he wants to do a surgical removal of about 9 inches including the Cecum. I can't tell you that I would be looking forward to it but I can say that I would prefer it to cancer. I'll probably get a second option but would appreciate your thoughts on the necessity. I am 73 years old but generally in good shape.

I think you should press for a second opinion. In my opinion, there are several issues in your case that need to be clarified. For example, why didn't they just remove the growth during the colonoscopy procedure like they did the last two times? What makes this removal so different?

Also, is this new polyp in the same place as the last one(which would suggest an unsuccessful removal of the last one), or is it in a completely different place (which might suggest a different kind of problem, perhaps hereditary or genetic in nature).

I think it would be good if another gastroenterology specialist could have a look at the data and comment on the possible utility of a specialized EMR procedure - Endoscopic Mucosal Resection.

I had a 3.5 cm polyp removed by EMR, located near the ileocecal valve. At the 3 mo follow-up colonoscopy, there were still some cells. I have to go back in January for another colonoscopy. I agree that surgery is better than cancer, but of course would like to avoid it. I can't give you advice, but would be interested in hearing what you decide. Good luck.

CT 4/15, spleen WNL.
6/17 3 cm benign polyp at ileocecal valve, awaiting removal
