O/T diversion continued ... The Voice FALL 2018 !!!!!!!

Postby CRguy » Wed Feb 28, 2018 1:25 am

Warning and disclaimer :
grumpy curmudgeon at large here

I almost ......
hesitate to bump this topic from 2017... BECAUSE I will be my same old hard hearted S.O.B.
when it comes to the sob stories about how hard your life was  :(
as your intro to the VOICE

people have tough lives = lots of us here on the forum,
some way tougher than ANY Voice contestant I have heard so far.

y'all know that song "shut up and dance with me" ?
WELL ... shut up and JUST SING YOUR ASSES OFF if you wanna be the VOICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry, BUTT after the first 4 contestants last night I shut off the TV and just let it record.

1. SING your heart out... no sob stories please, for me
2. Hate the BLOCK option = just another "ratings" trick which could railroad an artist AWAY from the proper coach for them
3. Kelly Clarkson = was hoping for better things from her ... maybe if someone could make her shut up for a bit ????
4. Alicia Keys = welcome back with MEGA talent !
5. YES I will re-watch and continue to watch ... BUTT ...
Still to be determined how this season will go.

YES I am a grumpy old bugger
and I LIKES IT that way  !!!!!!

STILL the MEGA BEST stage band ANYWHERE and the best "talent" show on TV
...IF they don't ruin it by doing something stupid

YMMV

You'd better start a new 2018 The Voice thread :!: :!: Haven't watched it yet, but was wondering if Kelly Clarkson was going to be a talker from her guest appearances 2017. So you answered that qx. Will be watching in the next couple of days.
Don't you know that singers, songwriters, musicians all have a tough life, emotionally stunted unless they become famous for people to appreciate their talents & long-term suffering? These are people that need recognition & coached to pull from their experiences to make their songs believable & overcome obstacles/rejection to obtain fame & success. Name of the game. Everybody else is just a poor sucker expected to suffer. :P

I'll be back...

THE BLOCK = I AGREE. More about the judge's tomfoolery which usually settles down after first 4 shows. At one point, the judges completely IGNORED one contestant for about 45 seconds after turning their chairs while fooling around w/one another, then addressed the contestant.

Saw NO REASON for the one contestant to bring his wife & kids onstage (no lead-in relating to music) other than to brag that he had adopted a kid from Honduras & no reason for the contestant to announce his lymphoma dx of 5 yrs ago ONSTAGE where he fought to compose himself. It was already a part of his story line. Apparently he wanted the JUDGES + STUDIO AUDIENCE to know that he almost died 5 yrs ago. A bit HEAVY for my taste.

Did enjoy Kelly Clarkson. We'll see how she is as a coach. Not familiar w/her music.

Blake Shelton just played The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, He got terrible reviews , although Garth Brooks, who opened and will close the 2 week season, was rated well ! I also like Alicia on the show, not so fond of that other lady .

I don't think much of Barbie, or KC, but Alicia could probably sing with any good Blues or Jazz musician still alive , or recently passed . JMHO.

They booked Garth to open the show, and close the show. With good fortune I am still working , partially from a lot of good advice on this forum. I just turned 62,didn't think I'd make it that far. Unfortunately, Garth plays on weeknights, and I'm too fragile to stay out late , when I have to work the next day. Ha!

This week's show = maybe I shouldn't go THERE, but if I can't understand the words = no votes from me.

Kelly Clarkson - So far I like her enthusiasm.

I found that too ... some vocals just cut thru the studio and some get lost and swallowed
so not sure if it's studio techniques which I've commented on before,
the music / vocal balance in the mix or just poor projection ????

KC
sorry I would trade her in an instant for Miley or Shakira,
on about a par with JHud, but arguably preferable to Barbie or Christina
... ALL JMO of course

BUTT could we put a mute switch on her please

Kelly's 1st whack @ being a judge. She might settle down a bit as others have. :)

This may be controversial, but I tend to call it as I see it. So I'm going THERE now. The one gal singing country got no turns to which Blake criticizes her "diction". Fair enough. I don't disagree, however TWO contestants sing in Spanish. The One who won Mexico The Voice as 4th place gets one chair turn (Kelly swooning all over it), the 2nd one gets FOUR chair turn; granted he sounded more talented of the TWO as far as carrying a tune or maybe it was a better melody to me, but I can't say cause I didn't understand a word of it. Wonder how many of the judges could criticize the "diction" of these two contestants. If you're bilingual it w/b better to sing the song in 1/2 Spanish/1/2 American English like some well known singers used to do. If it doesn't work for the song, choose another song. This is a contest. Just sayin...

I really liked the guy singing "My Girl" @ the keyboard thinking of his daughter. Liked how he handled himself, no BIG sob story, but was a bit difficult to get beyond the toilet bowl brush on his forehead. Thought he did do a nice rendition of that song. Terrence Cunningham I think is his name.

So ya, color me disappointed w/this week's The Voice.

There are millions of naturalized people who speak Spanish. My wife has dual citizenship ! I know one musician from Mexico, who lives in a nice house in Detroit, and at 16 years old, His Band took out the Beatles as No. 1, for the song 96 Tears.
I generally don't get offended by much, but critisism of someone's heritage, is somewhat beneath my integrity .

Nothing to do w/heritage, Bro Nut, but language chosen for a singing competition. Peurto Rico is a U.S. territory which I believe the 4 - chair turn was from or parents were from. I hold everybody to the same standard, that is if I can't understand what you're saying, then I wouldn't vote for you, whether it's English, American, French German or Spanish...just my criteria on whether I enjoy a song or the talent singing it. I don't think it's too much to ask that they mix it up 50/50 Spanish/English when they speak both languages. Any one reads my posts on The Voice threads knows one of my big complaints as long as I have been watching, is when ANY of the singers don't enunciate or when the music/acoustics override the singer's voice. It is a judging competition & words matter. JMO for my own viewing enjoyment. I know you are very proud of your wife as you should be!

Used to work w/a fella years ago. He & his wife BIG fans of Celine Dion. They spent the $ for tickets & airfare from West Coast USA to Eastern Canada (Quebec, I believe)for one of her concerts. However, the entire concert was sung in French! They hadn't even considered that as all of her songs in the US were in English  They had nothing against the French language, French people, or French Canadians far as I know in relaying his experience to me, as he was chuckling. So for their time, effort & money, was disappointing in their overall enjoyment to the fullest, but they did still enjoy the concert as much as they could w/o understanding what was being sung. Obviously she was singing to the majority in her audience. They were familiar enough w/her music not to be a total disaster. Was a humorous story though.
