Symptoms of local recurrence?

Postby Violet » Sat Feb 24, 2018 12:07 am

Hi guys,

My husband is 2 years out from an ultra low anterior resection for rectal cancer (T2NO) no lymphovascular or perineural invasion. He had surgery alone at the recommendation of the surgeon and two oncologists as it was stage one and didn’t need to be shrunk with chemo or radiotherapy preoperatively. He’s had five days of bladder symptoms- urgency/pain when is bladder is full. He saw our local doctor who ruled out a urinary tract infection as the cause and as it happens, we already have an appointment this week with his surgeon for routine follow-up. All his CT scans and CEAs have been normal so far although it’s 9 months since his last CT abdo/pelvis.

I guess I’m wondering what symptoms other people had of local recurrence or whether anyone has had bladder problems like this as a side effect of surgery?

I never had a local recurrence, but my surgeon told me that if I were to have one, it would probably occur in the first two years after surgery.

Yes, I think the balls are probably still in the air, and they'll probably reach their highest point around the time of the 4th or 5th quarterly review - - i.e., about a year or so from now...

Thanks for your replies. We saw the surgeon yesterday and he wasn’t sure what to make of it. Maybe adhesions on his bladder causing symptoms? .... he said recurrence usually presents with deep rectal pain/bleeding/change in bowel habit.

He had a kidney ultrasound which showed his prostate is slightly enlarged and his bladder wasn’t emptying completely on the first attempt but no masses in the pelvis. Now just waiting to hear if he should have another CT (last one four months ago was clear).

It’s hard not to be stressed by even mild symptoms after two years of no problems..
