New ileostomy

Postby tab16438 » Sun Feb 18, 2018 3:07 pm

I just had an ileostomy on February 13th they sent me home Friday. But I have not passed gas since I've been home. I'm just trying to figure out if anyone has any suggestions on how to help it along. Im very bloated and its uncomfortable. Has anyone else had this problem?

I would assume that you're passing waste out of the bag as I don't think that they would have discharged you if that wasn't the case. I very seldom have gas buildup as I think that there's much less processing to be done with an Illeostomy compared to your full digesting system but I have had gas take some some to go into the bag. If I have a carbonated water, it can result in a lot of gas going into the bag.

They should have tried to get you walking the day after surgery. Are you walking a fair amount? I've found that walking can help move things, including gas, along. The gas buildup usually occurs from eating too much at one time (outside of a carbonated water) so maybe smaller amounts of food several times a day instead of big meals.

If you aren't passing waste or much waste then I'd worry about a blockage.

Try walking. Slow & steady, it has helped me.

If you start to experience waves of pain and nausea (and possible throwing up), you might be having a blockage. If that does happen, stop eating/drinking until it passes, then resume with liquid for a few hours. If it continues for 6 or more hours, seek medical help.

Am I correct to assume your surgery was lapro? Sometimes people feel a build up of gas following such a surgery.

Maybe a call to your surgeon tomorrow if it continues.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Hi Tab,
I just had my surgery on the 31st. My bag gets full of gas, burps and bubbles. I don't have any gas out of my rectum if that's what you ,ean, nothing goes there to be gassy. There were a lot of painful burbs and bubbles immediately after surgery but walking took care of that. How is it going with your bag? Does it have a vent for the gas to release. Hopefully you have a nurse coming to the house to see you.
