I want to ask people who have had small bowel obstruction... How did you know it has cleared? My mom had one almost 4 weeks back. She wasn't vomiting much. But there was nausea vomiting diarrhea. Confirmed on CT scan. After 2 days of bowel rest they started fluid diet n it appeared like the obstruction cleared. She got her chemo and after a day or 2 she was unwell. Vomited twice and diarrhea too. The doctor said it does not look like obstruction. It's chemo related. She has been taking fluids since Monday. No nausea n all. But loose stools. My question is how do u know the obstruction has cleared??

It’s confirmed by imaging such as a CT scan or abdominal X-ray. It’s a good sign also if passing gas, not vomiting, and stooling. That means you have GI motility or movement.

Small bowel obstruction can happen for many reasons during cancer treatment. If it's temporary, look at diet. I found that whole grain foods would cause symptoms that would spontaneously resolve in a day. After a lot of research, I found that glyphosate ("Roundup") is in the food supply at levels that can cause symptoms for sensitive people. When I switched to organic grains, the problems went away. I've done this for more than two years now, and have not had a single recurrence.

Bowel obstruction is a medical emergency, so always see a doctor. But if they cannot pinpoint a cause, then look at diet. More here: http://www.lensjoy.com/Blog/EatOrganicOrDie.htm

When the pain goes away and you start passing BM or gas. My pain would come in waves

Make sure your mom drink ALOT of liquids a day or two prior to chemo.

I would always got a egg cheese breakfast sandwich on way to chemo.

Keeping food in stomach kept nausea at bay for me. Thus eat several small meals/snacks through day vs 3 meals a day.

Ginger helps get rid of nausea. Ginger snap cookies, ginger ale, ginger root.

Hope it get better for her,

Lee
