MD Anderson

Postby Bschreibs » Tue Jan 30, 2018 3:31 pm

I am thinking about getting a second opinion at MD Anderson. Does anyone have a specific doctor there they love? Please let me know. Thanks

We have been patients at MDA for over 7 years now. Our oncologist was Dr. Shureiqi. He really has your best interest at heart and a wonderful bedside manner. He spent lots of time with us and never seemed to be in a hurry to get out of the room. He has clinic hours two days a week and does research 3 days. Did his medical school at University of Michigan.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

If you live in the northeast, there is an MD Anderson in NJ. I go to Dr. Morrison. If you need more info, let me know.

I noticed in a previous reply you are stage 4 with numerous mets to the liver. You also said you were going to go to Sloan. Did you meet with Dr. Kemeny? Did it not go well?

We live outside of Houston and MD Anderson was there first place we sought help for DH. He was/is in a very similar situation as yourself. Multiple mets throughout his liver at diagnosis. MDAnderson (Saw Dr. Aloia) was not helpful at all. they told us there wasn't anything they could do. DH was just told to continue with his treatments (chemo) and there was a less than 5% chance he would ever be surgery ready. So they were little help unfortunately. We then sought out Dr. Kemeny and he got the pump and had surgery about 9 months after his original diagnosis. He was NED for 14 months, and had a recurrence about 6 months ago. He had 4 mets return and had IMRT for those in December. He has a scan this weekend, hoping to see good results from the Radiation and continued chemo.

Best of luck to you. I hope someone is able to give you a treatment plan

My mom sought a second opinion at MD Anderson because her local onc told her that she could only provide 2-5 years if treatment works, meaning chemo and then avastin maintenance. This was regardless of how she responded to treatment, surgery won't be an option. Dr. Raghav at MD Anderson didn't fully agree with the assessment that she would never be resectable, just that chemo is the best option at this time and the tumors would have to be shrunk first and then that option might be able to be discussed. However, we are going to go to MSKCC to see Dr. Kemeny to see about the HAI pump next as for my moms particular situation it would be the best fit if she is able to get it as it is an adjunct to treatment that could benefit her. So I am not sure your situation but I wouldn't say we didn't have a good visit to MD Anderson, as we was treated well by the staff and a few mishaps that happened they cleared up or helped make the situation go smoothly.
Caregiver to Mom DXed Oct 2017 CEA 156
Stage 4 with countless mets to liver told 2-5 years by local onc
11/17 Had consult with MD Anderson that didn't pan out CEA down to 56 no treatment
12/17 Start treatment Folfox + Avastin
2/18 MSK Consult Dr. Kemeny switched to Folfori + Erbitux CEA 14
5/18 HAI Pump/Liver Resection/Primary removed CEA 12
12/18 Liver resection CEA 56
1/19 - CT scan clean!
2/19 - CEA 3.1 Resumed treatment
