Reversal is Over

Postby Aqx99 » Tue Jan 23, 2018 7:00 pm

It took about 3 hours for my reversal surgery today. There was a ton of scar tissue my surgeon had to deal with when he got in there. I have an incision down my belly about 5 inches long. At least that explains why I woke up in excruciating pain!

To add insult to injury, I pressed the call button for more pain meds, and pressed and pressed. Then tried to yell for help. Finally, I texted my mom at home and she called the hospital. My bell was broken and there was no room phone. My pain level of 5 became a 9 by the time they came to give me my pain meds, half an hour after I started trying to call for it!

I'm sorry to hear that you are having so much pain. It must be difficult having to deal with the pain from the incision as well as the pain from the after-effects of radiation at the same time. Do what you need to keep the pain under control right now, but remember that the use of the industrial-strength pain relievers for a long time can cause constipation, and this, in turn, can cause other problems.

My doctor took me off the heavy-duty pain medication after 2 days and rationed me with 2 Tylenol pills per day after that.

Some other tips on post-reversal recovery are given here in a previous post:

I always try my best to wean myself off the pain meds as quickly as possible. As it stands now, they allow me to ask every 3 hours, I am averaging about every 4 hours or so before I feel I need to ask for them. I'm trying to use sleep to stretch out my doses.

Has the Pelvic Health Center nurse been to see you in the hospital yet? Maybe she can give some hints on how to manage pain once you leave the hospital. Perhaps there are some ointments or creams that have Lidocaine, Xylocaine or something similar that would help with your radiation-induced pain and skin problems.

Has your mother come to the hospital yet, or is she still at home? She might be able to help out with things at the hospital before you are discharged.

How is it going now? Has there been any reduction in pain level? Are you able to get up and walk around a little?
