Rough end to 2017, 2018 ?

Postby orlar » Sun Dec 31, 2017 12:00 pm

Hi Guys! I really haven't posted very much since being a member, but have valued the insight and compassion of the members on the forum. I find myself ending 2017 being somewhat discouraged, but trying to regain my fighting spirit. As you can tell from my signature, I had my 12th round of Folfox on Dec. 13, CT scan on Dec. 22nd, and a call from my onc on Dec. 27th. He said unfortunately the Folfox had totally failed as I now have a 4cm liver lesion and 2 lung nodules. He didn't pass along any other info as I have my follow up on Jan 4th. I have already scheduled a second opinion for Jan 22nd at a larger cancer center. Just curious what treatment options were given to others in this situation.

My wife is trying to stay strong in front of me, but I can hear her crying to herself sometimes. She's already disabled and I worry a lot about her if something happens to me. I've already planned a visit back to the Midwest (talk about the worst weather time to go) in between appointments to visit family and friends as I wanted to get a trip in before any treatment starts. I guess I just needed to vent some and seek any advice out there.

Have you check out immune therapy? There are several people on this board where traditional chemo has failed them. Beansmama is just one example. She went from failing all traditional chemo her with inoperable liver met, to now recovering from a major surgery (to remove liver met). Some of her Dr. (s) thinks she is probably NED today. She got to this successful point with Keytruda. This past year Keytruda was approved by the FDA for treating colon cancer.

If you have not already done so, please get 2nd opinion at major cancer treatments centers. You want to be aggressive at this point.

Yes this is a set back, butt not the end of the game. There are many options still available. Butt best advice I can give you, get opinions from major cancer hospital or treatment centers.

good luck,

I'm not in your situation but, of course, it's something that I worry about happening.

What I've seen here is that more information and more aggressive treatment can result in success. I think that I'd want Genomic testing of your tumor to know exactly what gene mutation you are dealing with as it might be something particularly aggressive. There may be treatment (clinical trial) options that open up based on the gene mutation.

Hi ,
Sorry to hear your news . It’s very frightening to hear it’s spread . My mum is heading round to her ninth year of a stage 4 diagnosis. We consulted with surgeons at every stage to see if it was operable . She had 73% of her liver removed when she was 69 and it’s remained clear ever since . Her lung met removal was by far the easiest surgery to day . Consult with specialist in each field .
It’s a plan that has seen of ten liver mets plus one lung met .
I wish you every success going forward .

stage4 2009 significant spread to liver
2010 colon /liver resection
chemo following recurrence
73% of liver removed
enjoying life treatment free
2016 lung resection
Oct 2017 nice clear scan . Two lung nodules disappeared
Oct 2018. Another clear scan .

Thanks for the input. I already expect I will be changing my ONC just because of the available options locally. Yesterday I was in a funk, today I'm getting my battle spirit back. Still hoping on NEDville some day!
