When are mets controlled/stable?

Postby Lovenothate » Thu Dec 28, 2017 8:02 am

Hey everyone!

Since my mom was first diagnosed she’s had lung spots that have been unchanged for over a year and a half fortunately. I’ve read that there are surgeons who will perform hipec if another metastatic site is “controlled”. When and how are mets controlled. Her onc only uses vague words such as “stable” or even worse “don’t worry about them.”

As always thank you for any insight or input.

Not sure I can do better than this definition:

Every HIPEC surgeon has his/her own standards/guidelines on when they think it's appropriate to operate. However, if the lung nodules have been unchanged for over a year and a half, they would be considered "stable."

Hope that helps!

Thank you for your replies! I guess being so unsure of my moms status means her onc isn’t being as straightforward as he can be.

I think "controlled" means the same as stable.
Feb. 2015 at age 39: Dx stage IIIb cecal cancer extending into appendix
March 2015 at age 40: Began FOLFOX, discontinuing early after 10 cycles due to suicidal ideation and difficulty moving
Oct. 2016 at age 41: Dx stage IV with 3 metastases to lungs (one 3.7 cm x 2.2 cm) and 1 to liver
KRAS-mutation positive
