Bowel Perforation -Avastin

Postby KimmyJo » Sun Dec 24, 2017 8:09 pm

Has anyone had a bowel perforation while taking Avastin? If so what was your treatment? My mom is currently in the hospital with a perforated bowel, but they can't operate because she just had chemo with the Avastin a couple of days ago? She was diagnosed with colon cancer in August & had half of her colon removed. She has had 7 rounds of chemo so far. The cancer was in 9 of 21 lymph nodes tested. About an hour ago her temp went from 99 to 101 & I am worried sick she is gonna go sepsis. The doctors & surgeons seem to be on different pages as to how to proceed. The surgeons say she would fall apart if they operated with it in her system, but I'm afraid we may be in a situation where they don't have a choice. Please share if you have any experience with this. Thank you!

I’m sorry your mom is in this situation. She is in the right place though. She should already be on very strong antibiotics right now. They are maybe waiting for her to be “stable” or to make sure she doesn’t have a blood infection (blood cultures). That takes a couple days to result. I don’t think they should rush in this sensitive situation. I know it sucks waiting for an answer :(

I am so sorry to hear this about your mom. I had a blockage which was detected early enough to perform surgery. I hope and pray that the doctors agree on the best way to treat your mom soon. Best of luck and good wishes for her and for you!

I had obstruction while on Avastin. I was unable to pass stools or gas.
Surgeons did not agree to perform surgery due to Avastin ( as they explained that bleeding would not stop) .
It was conservatively managed and thankfully, I was able to pass stools after 4 5 days.
Not the most pleasant experience.
