The dangers of this stuff have been known for some time (I read a WSJ article on it a few months ago) but what else are you going to do if you have cancer?

I think we can, at some point, start to ask for fewer scans. I just had an MRU of my pelvic area when I had a cystoscopy about 3 months ago. My CEA was 5.8 this time and so my onc ordered MRI of pelvic and abdomen. Sounds like one test, but it ended up being 2 tests w/o and 2 tests w/ g. All were fine. I'm 6 years post my liver met and 9 years post original Stage IIIB dx. I probably shine in the dark with all the CT scans, MRI's, PET, Ultrasounds I've had in the last 9 years! Good news is, I'm 67 and it usually takes 30 years for any cancers caused by radiation to appear so I might miss that time period. :-D

MRIs do not use ionizing radiation to image the body; it uses magnetic fields. Neither do ultrasounds, they use... wait for it... sound waves.

AND ... technically neither do PET scans themselves, but are usually accompanied by a low resolution CT for image registration purposes, which would give additional ionizing radiation exposure.

Don’t forget the gamma ray emitting tracer they inject you with for those though. :D

Yes, the equivalent of living one year in Denver, as I recall the statistic !

FDG (Fluorine-18) is a pretty weak, short-lived and localized gamma ray emitter,
and virtually non-detectable when most patients leave the imaging facility.

Yes, this has been known a long time, a belated FDA follow up. Use one of the safer brands of contrast and ask about personal risk factors.
