Keto diet?

Postby Tdubz » Sat Dec 02, 2017 10:15 pm

Hey guys,

So now that I’ve finished chemo, it’s time to focus on being healthy to hopefully prevent a reoccurrence. I’ve started to do some light exercise everyday with the hopes of increasing the intensity once my body isn’t so weak. I also need to change my diet. I came across the keto diet and it sounded like it might have some benefits for cancer patients, however I’m not sure if this includes colon cancer. Even if it doesn’t help with cancer, I’ve heard it’s a good way to lose weight and I could lose a couple pounds. Has anyone tried this diet or talked with their doctor about it?

To my knowledge, there is no clinical evidence the ketogenic diet reduces cancer risk. What has been proven to reduce risk are the following:

Avoid processed foods
Avoid red meat
Eat whole grains, especially organically grown
Eat more fruits and vegetables
Stop smoking
Reduce alcohol consumption, but complete abstinence hasn't been shown to be effective.
Coffee and tea may be beneficial if consumed without extra sugar or fat.
Male, false negative colonoscopy age 48

Stage T3N0M0 2 cm from anal verge

Rectal resection (open surgery) straight anastomosis
Xeloda round 2

I haven't see any reported cases of CRC dramatically responding to simple fasting, or separately, ketogenic diets, amongst the brave souls that tried them. Nevertheless I do suspect there are some potential health benefits with some big caveats. We certainly cut down on the carb content of meals the first year or two, fairly aggressively, but not a consistent keto diet. I still think it was a good move, certainly there were benefits to weight control, inflammation, cholesterol, HgbA1C, and FBS.

1. The ketogenic diets tend to be difficult for most people to achieve and sustain ketosis.
2. Not all ketogenic diets are equal. They can be built out of different protein and fat sources, with the question of which components or combinations are best. Also lurking in the background discussions, are the important non starch/sugar components of vegetables and fruits that may contain important aspects of cancer nutrition e.g. flavonoids and special fibers
3. Various sugar-cancer propositions are pushed too simplistically, with the cancer cells likely stripping the body of carbs and proteins. A simple fast can lose weight quickly and miss important nutrients to boot. Likewise keto diets with adequate energy intake can still miss important nutrients from inadequate vegetable and fruit extract intakes. There has long been some preclinical evidence that higher levels of flavonoids can do interesting things in cancer on a contributory basis, so a keto diet devoid of them may be counter productive, whatever the merits of induced ketosis. Also IGF-1 levels are related to carb intakes both in the short term sense with sweetners (including some non sugars) and obesity, so a potential positive merit for keto diet.
4. Failed keto dieters can put on pounds per day if they rebound and eat a high carb/high fat diet...
5. To inhibit glucose utilization in cancer cells we also use IV vitamin C.

Has anyone tried this diet or talked with their doctor about it?

We have had some discussions on the ketogenic diet in the past, and here is a forum search to some of those posts going back to 2010.

My son (he is a resident doctor right now) conducted a research on my behalf of available information in mainstream medical magazines.
His conclusion: "Diet impact after a diagnosis is very minimal. You can eat whatever you want without worrying about a recurrence."

Personally I trust only information in mainstream medical magazines and on websites of major hospitals like Mayo, M. D. Andersen, Cleveland Clinic etc.
58 yo male at diagnosis: T1bN0M0, 0/15 nodes, low grade/moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma
03/2016 colonoscopy: 2 small polyps removed in left colon; CEA = 1.3
04/2016 colonoscopy: caecum sessile 3.5 cm polyp piecemeal removed with kind of clear margins
05/2016 "prophylactic" laparoscopic right hemicolectomy - bleeding, leak, infection
06/2017 CT scan, colonoscopy OK; CEA = 1.6
A lot of funny stuff discovered by CT scans in liver, kidney, lungs, arteries, gallbladder, lymph node, pancreas

A ketogenic diet can cause health problems too.

You might consider a low carb diet on the order of about 33% carbs. It's not ketogenic but the carbs may be low enough to provide some help with weight loss. These are approaches to weight loss that I've used:

- Food and nutrition tracking (lots of apps and websites provide these)
- Relatively low carb
- Lean protein
- Minimize sugars
- Regular exercise (tough to do while in treatment)
- Efficient exercise (HIIT with muscle building > strength training > intense cardio > low-intensity cardio)
- Social support (family, friends and forums with others focused on losing weight in a good way)

Read The China Study by Dr. T Campbell. Listen to Dr. Mcdougall lectures on YouTube.
Keto diet is probably a very bad idea for cancer.
As others have suggested, vegan diets may be best for us.

uh, you can have a ketogenic vegan diet, just the vegetable portion has to be low carb veggies. Coconut oil and olive oil are vegan. To have some fruit content you would have to use fruit extracts that have no sugars/carbs. Vegan sources of some of the best vitamin forms are trickier.
