How many diagnosed have family with history?

Postby rbusbee » Thu Nov 16, 2017 3:53 pm

I am having a colonoscopy soon because of some trouble that I am having and I am just curious the chance of cancer due to my father being diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at age 48. He passed away at age 55 from his cancer. I am 38 now and have been having some issues for a year now. I am aware that it is likely NOT cancer but my primary dr recommended I get checked out bc of my dads history. I am just curious how many here that have been diagnosed also have family members that have or have had colon cancer.

My Dad was diagnosed with stage 3 RC when he was in his 60's. He's still around, walking every day, and making messes in the kitchen.

At the time of his diagnosis, my sister and I both had colonoscopies. I was 45, and she was 42. Both clean at that point. I continued to have them every 5 years, until I ended up in the ER with gangrene and sepsis due to a rectal tumor. My surgeon is still puzzled by this today. His best guess is that at the colonoscopy previous to diagnosis, the GI missed something. Most likely a flat polyp, although the placement of the tumor makes his suspicious because it should have been easy to see. I guess we'll never know.

My daughter has had 2 colonoscopies. One at age 27, where a polyp was found, and then 3 years later, no polyp.

All this is with no apparent genetic component. Not Lynch anyway, there must be a connection butt current science hasn't pin pointed it yet.

You are due for a scope now. Do not put it off. I have been told by doctors that they will usually start scopes on sons and daughters of CRC parents 10 years prior to when parent was dx. I was dx at 53 and my daughter has been told they will start at 40 with her. I would prefer earlier for her to get checked I think she agrees and will have her first scope at 30 approx three years from now. I am the first in my family to get CRC or any cancer for that matter.

I am the first in my family. We have prostate cancer on my dad's side and breast cancer on my mom's side. That is why my diagnosis came as such a shock to us all. I have spent my entire adult life basically waiting for the day I found out I had breast cancer. My body decided to play a cruel trick on me.

No one in my family with colorectal cancer.

It’s odd because I have dna repair mismatch and it’s never shown up in my parents, grandparents, great grandparents, or siblings.

Or in any of my grandparents siblings. Or parents siblings.

Guess I am “special.”

My paternal grandmother died of colon cancer in 1986. Otherwise, no history. And I took the genetic Color test and found no genetic mutations.
