From the replies so far, as you can see recovery varies widely from person to person. The type of resection also plays a big role. My husband had almost his entire colon removed a couple months ago, with the rectum intact and no stomy. He still has diarrhea but otherwise he felt back to normal a couple of weeks after surgery.

I'm 10 years out this month and never did get back to ... "normal."

I function fine and do most anything I want to do. But I had a severe response to chemo/rad, which triggered joint damage. With light use of painkillers, I can get through most days with a near normal schedule. But it is up and down. Some days I just want to sit on the couch. And anything that requires crawling around a bit saps my energy quickly. My docs are baffled that chemo/rad triggered what it did. Oh well.

No complaints. Fifty years earlier, I would probably be dead. So ... you keep going forward and adapt.

Nearly 4 years out and I have not returned to how I was before cancer/surgery. But my 'new normal' is quite tolerable.

It was several weeks for me.
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 12 years NED). Is this real life?

For me it took about 4.5 years, with an initial plateau of improvement at around 1 year, and another, higher plateau at around 3 years.

My initial treatment for T4bN0M0 tumor included radiation, surgery, and adjuvant chemotherapy, and all three of these impacted bowel management adversely.

It's funny I remember whilst in hospital after the resection a doctor saying things (bms) won't ever be as they were before but she was wrong. I'm actually having better bms now than before resection and don't experience things like urgency or anything else untoward. It's hard to say how long it took because the advised low residue diet post surgery made me constipated as did chemo (compaction eww). But once chemo finished, my appetite was great, I could add fibre to my diet and haven't looked back since.

I had an laparoscopic anterior resection of my sigmoid colon, i believe they removed 10cm in total, so i'm thinking its pretty minor compared to others and might be why I don't have issues.

Three years since surgery, had 46cm removed and some omentum. Like some of the above posters, I can do most things and eat most things I want but it is definitely different than before surgery. Some days have urgency after eating and need to be careful when eating out and at work, energy level certainly not what it was but with scheduling and I only work part-time now so I get by. The worst aspect is abdominal pain which I am told comes from adhesions and I regularly take opiate based medication for this, which has its own side effects.
However it seems to be a very individual thing, from talking to others at my local cancer support center, who have had similar surgery, most would say they have largely returned to what they were before surgery.

Still trying to figure out food and diet and bowels 17 months after a right hemicolectomy. Frustrating but I try to remember it can always be worse.

I’m the exact opposite as most of you. I had diarrhea almost everyday for years before I was diagnosed. I’d go to the doctor just to be told I had IBS. Finally they found that I was anemic and that’s basically how my cancer was discovered. After my surgery, everything went back to normal. I can actually go out and do things now without having to know where the bathroom is at all times.
