He's also lost ten pounds which is mostly muscle I think since he was lifting weights daily before this.

Nerve pain and tiredness aren't uncommon at 5 weeks post-op. I had some numb spots on my rib cage and other areas with sharp nerve pain. Eating a high protein diet will speed up his recovery and strengthen him for the next surgery. Try upping his calorie intake too but with quality calories. Walking a few miles per day will improve his lung function. They will test his lungs pre-surgery and if he isn't ready they will delay the next op.
