Large mass in rectum

Postby ZeeZee » Wed Oct 25, 2017 1:15 pm

just turned 34, and for the last 2 months or so I had been getting flat stools and pencil thin with mushy stools with nor formation which is very unusual for me as mine a very usually large and round. I made a GP appointment in September and she ordered FOB test, she did a digital exam woth her finger and said it seemed normal, the FOB came back negative and dismissed me off. I went back again and she just out me on a low fodmap diet. I then went to see a private Gastro and he wants me to do a colonoscopy (it hasn't been scheduled as to when it will be). He believes I have an evacuation problem and suggested I take glycerine suppositries and laxatives. The suppository hasn't helped and at the end of a bowel movement I feel like I need to strain and something is coming out but stuck.

This will sound gross but I put my finger up to see if I can get it out but there was nothing there. Then I strained whilst having my finger there and I could feel some bulge coming right into my anus hole. I tried to see what is is with a mirror. It's bright red/pink and can be seen when my anus hole opens to defecate. It kind of covers the whole area and when I stop straining it goes back up.

Is this a tumour? Why couldn't the GP feel it?

Has any one got any experience or advice.

Thanks.

My advice would be to follow up on your colonoscopy appointment with the gastro and get the colonoscopy scheduled as soon as possible, because this will likely answer your questions.

If there is indeed a mass in the rectum, then they can take a biopsy sample and send the sample to the pathologist for analysis.

I agree, you need a colonoscopy, the sooner, the better. Do not assume it is cancer, could be a hemorrhoid or something else. Butt the colonoscopy will give you a true diagnoses if anything is going on. Anything else is just a speculation.

Do you know if cancer does run in you family?

I think that an x-ray or CT scan would confirm if you had a mass, but, if you do have a mass, then you'd need to get a biopsy to determine exactly what you have and the biopsy is done with a colonoscopy.

As to why a digital examination might not find it: it may be that the mass is motile (can move around a lot) and that a digital examination wouldn't go far enough.

As everyone else has said, get a colonoscopy as soon as possible. Scheduling can vary from hospital to hospital but I was able to get one the same day that I went to the ER to have mine looked at. They did an X-Ray or CT Scan and then scheduled the colonoscopy for later in the afternoon and they sent the biopsy out for reading.
