so scared

Postby lkub » Wed Oct 25, 2017 10:41 am

My husband has been NED for over a year from 3b rectal. Last week, his CEA jumped to 44.4! It was 1.4 in April. He is having a CT today - I don't know why it wasn't stat. He has been having back/sciatic pain for a few weeks, but we never thought it could be cancer related. Now he is having swelling in his left leg, a swollen abdomen, and left quadrant pain that responds to Aleve. He knows nothing about CEA and doesn't google, so he thinks it could be something other than recurrence. I have found no evidence anywhere of a CEA that high not being a recurrence. But he feels fine otherwise, and is at work.

Your husbands staging and course of treatment is very close to mine so I'm aware of the fear and anxiety of metastasis and the emotions that you go through in waiting. That said, all that you can really do is wait for the results of the scans to see whether or not there is anything there and then discuss treatment options of there has been spread. I know that it's easy to say as many have told me not to worry about something but that's really hard to do. So we'll be here for you when you get the results hoping that it isn't recurrence.

I'm praying your husband's scan is negative for recurrence. But until you hear otherwise he is NED. There are many on this forum that have had recurrences and have responded to recommended treatment and have been NED for a long time. Try and stay positive, although I know it is hard. We all worry about every little twinge and have anxiety with every blood draw or scan. Positive thoughts coming you way.

Keep us posted, until you know one way or the other, try and stay positive (I know harder said than done). Know that there many options if your worst fears are confirmed. And many people are able to get to NEDville again, and many more are living their lives with a stage IV diagnoses.

Do not give up the hope,

Thinking of you hun <3 I am sorry to hear that it came back but my mom has similar pain to your husband's. More pain in that region too. My mom just had her surgery just like what you mentioned. She is having a HARD time with recovery. She was dehydrated today and I filled her up with electrolytes. I almost had to take her to the emergency room cause she was so weak. She has no appetite, doesn't want to drink, etc. She is taking Tylenol for pain and Oxycodon. I feel helpless as her pain is mainly in the ileostomy stoma area. I called the on-call dr. and I understand that she had a HUGE operation and it's not going to be a walk in the park but recovery is going to be a bumpy ride.

I'm so sorry. It might be a good idea to get opinions at major cancer treatment centers. You want to treat this aggressively. HIPEC might be something to consider.

Don't give up the hope,
