First Chemo (Oxaliplatin/Leukovorin 2hr/5FU Infuser)

Postby MKC70 » Sun Oct 15, 2017 11:26 am

Hi there! My first chemo is tomorrow and now my ride has completely fallen through. I am not scared or worried about going by myself at all. I am fine doing it on my own this time. Medically speaking. Will I be OK driving back from the appt? I am having the Oxaliplatin/Leukovorin 2hr/5FU Infuser and they will give me a pump to have at home for 2 days. Thanks

I was always okay to drive there and home. My daughter always came with me, but I drove and I would've been okay without her. I had a 2 hr
Oxi infusion.

I have driven myself to and from since June. I go by myself since hubby has to continue working. Gotta keep that insurance! ;)

I'm on the same treatment as you but also get Avastin. Take snacks as you'll be there for a while. I take back roads going home and just take my time. :)

I get a sort of vertigo feeling after my oxaliplatin infusion. I don't trust myself to drive, so my neighbor drops me off and picks me up.

I always drove myself to chemo. Butt it was only about 15 mins away. How far of a drive do you have? If there are problems, take the taxi home.

Some pointer, make sure to drink LOTS of water today, you will lose it in the next few days. You do not want to get dehydrated I always got a breakfast egg and cheese sandwich on way to chemo. At least I got some carbs and protein in me.

Just so you know... it will be a personal thing for you.
Some folks have reactions which would make it questionable to be driving ....
others have no immediate reactions and are fine.

My wife came with me for the first couple of infusions as she wanted to be there for support
BUTT I actually did all the driving for 12 FOLFOX cycles myself
( had my powerport on the upper right chest so I could use seat belts over my left shoulder without issues  when I was the driver )

See how you feel during and after the infusion
Don't be a hero... this IS a major procedure and your body needs to accept it and adjust

If you feel like shit = take a taxi or call a friend or investigate the patient "assist" services which should be available through the infusion/cancer center.

Most welcome my friend.

AND I think maybe not so O/T, as MKC70 is heading to first infusion and with a million things going thru the mind

First of all, good luck!!

I drove myself there and back to each chemo. I was by myself for the last 6 or so treatments.

My only issue was the steroids they gave with the chemo would make my blood sugar wonky. If I didn't eat after chemo I felt worse. But I didn't feel hungry...just nauseous and headachey and sick from not eating. So I'd eat something in my car before I drove home.
