Recently for some reason I decided to do an online search for someone I knew from college. After some checking, I found her and saw that she did get married and has 2 young kids. Reading more through what was put online, her husband went in to get checked out for back pain that he thought was from moving something heavy. The result of this checkup was his diagnosis of stage 4 lung cancer and given 6 months to live. The doctors were correct and he passed within that 6 month window.

Three years later, she was at the point where she was ready to move on with her life. Met a new man who proposed to her and she accepted. She went in for a doctor's appointment and the result of that checkup was her diagnosis of stage 3 pancreatic cancer. She lived for a couple of years and ended up passing away in 2012 at the age of 42 leaving behind her two young kids now with no parents.

Very tragic.

Thx Maia. BFF had consult & is penciled in (in pen for UCSD, in pencil for her) for HIPEC Dr. Lowy, UCSD (University of California, San Diego) for Dec. 1. Sounds like she is a good candidate on the low end (PCI estimated below 10) of peri mets, estimate 5 hr surgery. No staples for closing incision; he uses glue & mytomycin-C for chemo agent. She is very apprehensive about surgery + long recovery. Now w/her DH's dx of St IV prostate cancer w/mets to rt hip/pelvic area, 8th rib, she is strongly thinking of postponing her surgery depending on whether she can get everything choreographed between the two of them = doc appts + insurances + hotel accomodations, etc. We have been furiously reading, learning about prostate cancer while she is half crazed trying to manage all of this, find & get him to urologist (done, prostate hard as a rock) to medical oncologist (done as of yesterday) & scheduling beginning of tx (he is reluctant @ his age 67) before they have to fly out for her surgery & subsequent recovery. 2nd opinion may or may not occur before he starts hormone therapy, but looks like that is where you start. Prostate cancer & tx meds all very confusing.

The starting plan for him is Lupron inj + Casodex pill form, then when back from San Diego, add Zytiga (+prednisone I guess has to go w/it). Getting hubby to become part of the medical establishment/system...well the jury is still out on that. QoL is huge to both of them. As well documented on this form, making decisions based on what you don't know, furthered by what you don't know is difficult @ best.

Though I do make a bit of noise from time to time, I do realize that the longer we're floating around the "sea of life" we're going to pick up a few additional barnacles, carbuncles, you name it...but this all seems ridiculous in hitting @ once w/my snl (pancreatic cancer in June), my BFF (advanced appendix cancer in Oct) + BFF's DH (advanced prostate cancer also in Oct).
