Did anyone have experience with Cystitis caused by Irinotecan.

Postby boswind » Tue Sep 19, 2017 8:51 pm

Hi All,

I started Irinotecan two months ago, now I feel I have Cystitis. Today my Onc. ordered urinary analysis and the report shows there is no unitary track infection and there are no bacteria in urine. I read an article, which states Irinotecan could cause Cystitis especially for colrectal cancer patients of age 60 or older.

I would like to know if any one had such Cystitis and any methods to treat such Cystitis.

Thanks

Hi Boswind,

I've been on Irinotecan for a shorter period than you. I've only completed 6 sessions so far. I experienced what I'd call cystitis like symptoms after my third treatment but I was also very dehydrated at the time from the side effects. I passed very little urine and when I did it stung like hell. My symptoms improved after 3 days and 6 liters of rehydration so I never mentioned it to my oncologist. I wasn't aware that cystitis was another possible Irinotecan side effect.

I hope they figure out how to treat you maybe someone else can offer you more first hand experience.

Good luck!

Hi Shana,

Thanks for your reply. The article's data show about 1% patients taking Irinotecan got Cystitis and 75% of them were female. I guess I got a jackpot :(

I believe you are a female, when I was on chemo, (female here) I thought I had a UTI. Onc said it was probably yeast infection, turned out she was right.

Good luck,

Lee,

I meant if 75% were female, then only 25% were male.

Therefore for a male getting Cystitis caused by Irinotecan, the change was 1% x 0.25% = 0.0025, which is as small as a chance of getting a Jackpot.

Hi Boswind,

Those are certainly slim odds! I hope they can clear up your Cystitis fast, I can easily imagine the discomfort that you're dealing with.

I hesitate to suggest that you buy a scratcher this weekend, but you never know! :D

Take care and feel better soon,

Shana
