MDAnderson is taking patients again

Postby justin case » Mon Sep 04, 2017 4:16 pm

MD Anderson is taking patients, and has recruited 150 extra personnel to help catch up on treatments. That is the latest I have heard as of right now, 4PM in Houston .9/4/2017.

Good to hear. I can imagine the anxiety of those that missed regular treatments and those traveling in for second opinions.

And now we have Irma to worry about. I'm fairly sure I can get my chemo on Thursday but Saturday to get the pump off might be iffy. Have to keep an eye on things.

Irma is not coming anywhere near Texas.

But it us coming for my state. I'm on the east coast and it could be very bad for people even for locals getting chemo like me.

The worst of it should be done by the time I need to go again in two weeks.

Where do you stay, when you come to Houston ? Is that accommodation available ?
That was a stupid statement, I didn't realize Orlando had a facility !

It's not that stupid a statement as I think that many of us have had to deal with difficult hotel/parking/travel issues in using these top-notch places which tend to be in big cities. I have an appointment at one of the Boston hospitals in a week and a few days and the options were 7 AM, and in the evening. Getting out of Boston on Friday evenings can be exceptionally challenging so I took the 7 AM and I have to be there at 6:30 for the preparation. It's an hour to drive there with no traffic but traffic gets bad from my area around 5:30. I basically need to hit the border by 5:00 AM to get a smooth ride in. So I will likely leave around 4:15 AM, get there at 5:15, take 15 to park ($35 for 8 hours unless validated), work in the cafeteria until 6:15 and then go to the appointment. That's more or less how I did all of my appointments in Boston a few months ago. I'm sure that there are lots of stories about big-city hospital appointments from this group.

I get my chemo at a local Hematology and Oncology Center. They've cancelled my appointment for tomorrow. They are closing the place at noon tomorrow so they can prep for Irma.

My last appointment was pushed back a week because my grandkids gave me their cold. So antibiotics for a week and I was supposed to get chemo tomorrow.

I was responding well to chemo before this. Will this give the cancer a chance to regain strength?

I hate that I've taken such a good forward step and am afraid of any steps backwards. :(

I can't even predict that the center will be up and running next week.

Current forecasts have Irma hitting the East coast mid-Florida early Sunday morning with 120 MPH winds so it depends on how much damage results. I ask the question on whether the cancer can migrate or move while off chemo because there are six-week recovery periods on my plan and don't really have an answer. The six-week recovery plans are based on how well patients do overall after treatment so it feels like it's a numbers thing. But not everyone falls inside the good numbers range. So I don't really know but I plan to ask my oncologist.
I do hope that Florida makes it through Irma intact. I'm glad that MD Anderson is back and that they are working hard on the backlog.

My understanding the basic stuff (5FU) will stay in your body for about 7-8 weeks. I believe you will be okay, sometimes there has been delays for many people for many different reasons and everything turned out fine.

Be careful, be safe regarding Irma.

Thank you so very much!

We are putting up hurricane shutters now. Some models are indicating that it will exit Florida right over where we live.

There was a time where I had to dismiss chemo for a week or so, and radiation. I would take a break, and worry about Irma first. Stay out of the water while your blood cells recuperate. mosquito's may be prevalent !
