Skin rash side effects from Xeloda

Postby ocstacy » Wed Aug 30, 2017 11:44 pm

Hi All,

I was wondering what has helped you with your hand/foot rash from Xeloda? My mom ended her Neoadjuvant therapy on 8/16 and she is experiencing more pain in the rectum area and has developed more of a rash (looks like bug bites) on her ankle feet area. She mentioned that that it got worst when she stopped treatment.
She uses Aquaphor, Udderly Smooth body cream and hand cream, and the dr. prescribed her some dermatitis cream for her sores. The only pain med that helps her relieve her pain Is the "Coating" and Sits bath with Aquaphor. I am feeling helpless now. Have you guys tried the Lac-Hydrin 12% for the Xeloda rash? The Dr's and nurses are well aware of this rash and says it's normal but wondering what else can help with the pain. I have a stubborn mother of a patient. :|

Hi OC Stacy,

I hope your mom's surgery went well. My husband just started Xeloda this morning so no rash yet, but the USC pharmacy sent a tube of Urea20 intensive hydrating cream made by Rugby along with the Xeloda. Might be worth a try. Our onc said to put it on and then put plastic bags over the hands and feet for about 30 minutes.

John dx 12/16 at age 56, stage IV 40+ mets to liver (unresectable) and lungs
5 treatments Folfox + Avastin + clinical trial drug 1/17-3/17, good results
3 months immunotherapy in Germany + 3 TACE, 2 TPCE and 1 chemo perfusion (3/17-6/17)
Back on Folfox + Avastin 8/17, 4 treatments
10/17 scan showed reduction in some tumors; stability in the rest.
10/17 starting "maintenance": xeloda 2 wks on, 1 wk off, 4000 mg; possibly Avastin once every 3 wks

My oncologist prescribed the original formula of Eucerin for me. I slather it on thick and put cotton gloves and socks on. If your mom develops a lot of pain with the hand-foot, let her oncologist know. I had to stop 4 days early during my second cycle because the pain was so bad I could barely walk. She reduced the dose for the third cycle and I did not have a problem. I found the cotton gloves to be cheapest at a Halloween store, where they were $2.99, versus about $6.00 at the pharmacy.

Consider Vitamin B6 (a tip I received from a member here) which really helped with my hand/foot issues.
