Have a question. Had my CEA drawn yesterday for my 3 month check. It came back at 1. Although I know that is low,
should I be concerned that mine has always been less than .5? It did get up to 1.1 during chemotherapy and was .6 last February, but for the most part as come back at less than .5 The constant worries even after cancer is gone. Ugh.

I don't think you should be worried. Did you have it drawn at a different lab? Mine varies, depending on which lab draws it.
Mine goes from .5 to 1.5, and I asked my onc if I should be concerned. He said: " are you kidding me? No!"
I think if it continuously climbs, time to step up to a scan.

My oncologist emailed me today and said she wasn't concerned about the small rise in CEA level. It is still in the low normal range, but we will keep monitoring. So I will not worry. Yeah right, because we cancer patients never worry about every little thing. It's always in my head, but trying to be positive.

That's for sure. Others don't realize it's not over because we've finished treatment and may be cancer free at the time. Any little twinge, change in bloodwork, or unfamiliar wording on a scan result can make us feel stressed even though we try not to show it as to make others feel uncomfortable. All this, plus dealing with the lasting effects of treatment. It will be with us for the rest of our lives, even though we are thankful for responding to treatment it isn't always easy. But is helps to be here to express our worries and feelings to others that understand. Thank you.

CEA can change by .5 when two tests are done from the same vial by the same person at the same time. It can also change due to time of day, how much you've had to drink (as in water) or if you have the sniffles. Mine went to 4.4 and my CT scan came back that I had walking pneumonia a few springs ago. We re did it after my medication for the pneumonia was all done and it was back to my norm.
Stage III cc surgery 1/7/09. 12 tx FOLFOX
Stage IV PET = 1.5cm liver met. HR 4/11/12
14 years since dx and 11 years post liver resection.
