O/T-Solar Eclipse-Updated with video link

Postby JudeD59 » Tue Aug 15, 2017 12:22 pm

My oldest daughter has a Masters Degree in aerospace engineering. That's right, the nutty lady has a rocket scientist for a daughter. Trust me, I'm as confused about how that happened as you probably are. Anyway, she worked in the orbiter of the space shuttle Endeavor for years, then worked on Navy jets after the space shuttle program ended, and then quit that to concentrate on her passion of inspiring middle school kids to take more interest in science, technology, math, and engineering. She formed her own small company and produces educational videos, speaks on panels, gives presentations, etc.

She and her business partner are traveling to Nebraska to be the first people to launch a high altitude weather balloon during the solar eclipse next week. They built a type of basket with a 3D printer to house some GoPros and a 360 degree camera to capture not only the eclipse, but also the shadow pattern on the ground during the eclipse.

I just wanted to share because I'm so proud of her plus I think it's a really interesting idea. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly and they'll get some amazing video to share with the world.

Anyone have any special plans for the eclipse? I know that when we were visiting Grand Teton National Park two weeks ago, there were lots of events planned since they are in the path to have a great view of it.

If anyone is interested and if things go well, I can ask CRGuy if I can post a link to the video after it's uploaded. Let me know if anyone would like to see it.

Have a great day wherever you are!

Judy

I would love to see it. Thank you. I live right in the path of the eclipse - Charleston/Cleveland Tennessee. We should have one of the best views as it travels across the country.

Definitely hook us up with the video if it is possible, sounds cool! And you must love being able to say your daughter really is a rocket scientist!

My son starts college at University of South Carolina in Columbia which is one of the optimal viewing locations--they are expecting thousands of visitors for the eclipse so they had to move the school's move in date to Tuesday to help with the crowds. LOL Will catch the eclipse on the way down on the drive.

We'll be in Michigan so I don't know how much will be visible. Might just catch a sliver.

Judy, I can understand why you're proud of your daughter. Female engineers are pretty rare, and ones that think 'out of the box' even more so. I'm proud by association.

What a wonderful idea she and her business partner have come up with. I'd love to see it. I suspect if we twist CRGuy's arm he might agree.

Best Wishes,

I'm lucky enough to be in area where we get 99% lunar coverage. Should be pretty good thing to see.
I remember last time I experienced full lunar eclipse. Was about 7 or 8 years old. Thought it was the end of the world. LOL

That's so cool about your daughter Judy! You must be so proud. :)

I am lucky enough to live in the "path of totality" in Oregon, and despite the fact that my little coastal town is being invaded by tourists for the event, I am really excited. I'm just hopeful we'll be able to see it- it is often very foggy here in the mornings in August. My fingers and toes are crossed. I took the day off from work so I could stay home and hopefully watch the eclipse from my backyard. So exciting!

I too, am in the path of eclipse watching, however my special plans w/b watching it on TV b/c of this ARTICLE/REMINDER:

As an Optometrist , I want to express concern that I have about the solar eclipse on Monday, Aug 21. There are serious risks associated with viewing a solar eclipse directly, even with the use of solar filter glasses. Everyone should keep in mind if they or their children are considering this.

We have to keep in mind that some people will encounter the inability to control every aspect of this exercise. For instance, true solar eclipse glasses are made for adults, do not fit children well and should not be used without direct parental supervision. If the solar glasses do not filter out 100% of the harmful UV rays, if they are not used absolutely perfectly, or should there be a manufacturing defect in any of them, this will result in permanent and irreversible vision loss for any eye exposed. Just like sunburn to the skin, the effects are not felt or noticed immediately. I have a great fear that I will have patients in my office on Tuesday, Aug 22 who woke up with hazy, blurry vision that I cannot fix. It is a huge risk to watch the eclipse even with the use of solar glasses. There is no absolutely safe way to do so other than on TV.

The biggest danger with children is ensuring proper use without direct parental supervision. As the eclipse passes over many places, including Columbus, the moon will not block 100% of the sun. Because so much of its light is blocked by the moon, if one looks at it without full protection, it does not cause pain as looking at the sun does on a regular day. Normally if you try to look at the sun, it physically hurts and you can't see anything. During an eclipse, however, it is easier to stare for a bit....and even less than 30 seconds of exposure to a partially eclipsed sun, you can burn a blind spot right to your most precious central vision. With solar glasses you can't see ANYTHING except the crescent of light of the sun. Kids could have a tendency to want to peak around the filter to see what is actually going on up there. One failure, just one, where education and supervision fail, will have such a devastating consequence.

Please, please be safe. Watch it on television.

I am very interested in the video as well. Congrats to your daughter & business partner...and to you on your daughter's success, Proud Mamma!
