Burning while urinating, 2 more days of radiation left!

Postby ocstacy » Tue Aug 15, 2017 10:11 am

Hi all,

My mom will finish her Xeloda and radiation in 2 days! It really went by very fast. :D She has been a good patient for the most part, some highs and lows but I am very surprised on how well she did. She maintained the same weight which is good and is eating and drinking the right foods. I would say out of all of the weeks I have been with her, the middle of the 3rd week and this last week was the hardest. She developed a UTI and had to get on antibiotics. She also mentioned that she feels like her rectum is burning around the rectal area and inner part, and her urine and BM burn more while going. She mentioned like blisters, but apparently it's normal they say. She has shown everything to the dr. but I guess they just target the tumor more in the last week. The dr. described it like a flashlight getting smaller and smaller and they target the tumor more intense, instead of the outer area. I don't care, just shrink the damn cancer!! lol

I keep mentioning to her that a nice soothing sitz bath will her maybe, but she declines taking one. Not sure why. What has helped you with your radiation burn or pain? Does it get better after you stop taking the Xeloda and radiation when you are on a break? Any recommendations or advise?

I remember during radiation the last couple weeks it feeling like I was urinating glass when I went. My radiation oncologist have me lidocaine which I used to numb the area before I went, it really helped. I also took baths and would lay under my ceiling fan to cool the area. Hope she's feeling better soon

It does get better after you're done takes a couple weeks to heal the skin

I didn't have any urinary issues, but I did slather my butt with Aquaphor every time I went to help with the burning. It can be used internally, as well.

I absolutely am a fan of the sitz bath--definitely helped me through the last portion of radiation where your skin is at it's most vulnerable. I also got a peri rinse bottle (both were given to me from radiology office when I asked nurse about them) and that was great for rinsing off after a BM as toilet paper felt like sand paper for a few weeks. I also slathered on the aquaphor. I bounced back fairly quickly, I would say within a week I really did start feeling better, certainly you can never be 100% yourself after you receive that much radiation to your pelvic region, but it is possible to get back to feeling well within a short time from radiation. It really is so unique to each person how they fare. I hope she is able to find comfort and know she is one accomplishment closer to the end of it all. Much love to your mom!

That is great to know but my mother declines on taking baths.. she is very stubborn. What do you put in your sitz bath? I know some people put Epsom salt and others just use luke water. Good idea about the peri rinse bottle, I didn't even know the offered it @ the radiation office. I remember getting that thing when I had a baby. I loved that bottle, especially on my damn hemmoroids. I didn't even get to the pushing part and I still had hemmy's ended up with a C-Section. 9 pd 4 oz baby! :)

You really don't have to be a bath person to use a sitz bath as it just sits over top of the toilet, maybe she doesn't realize that. It really only requires the 10 or so minutes of sitting on it while the water flows through. I just did warm water, nothing fancy, but it really was the best feeling when I got to the end of radiation. Sad but true, those sitz baths were a "treat" and it was a bum-mer when the water would turn cool. LOL And yeah, I too used the peri rinse bottle after childbirth and that definitely came to mind as I was in need of it. Oh well, the things we do to get through it and ease the pain. Definitely ask the radiation nurses, I would think they would gladly give your mom the rinse bottle and sitz bath if you ask.

Looks like I have a lot to look forward too. I really haven't had any of the burning yet and I'm a day away from being halfway through it. I think that this was the first day that I "felt" the radiation. So that may mean that the blistering/burning stuff is starting. At any rate, two days to go sounds like a dream from where I'm sitting (sometimes with a bit of pain). Hope she recovers well after the treatments.

A sitz bath was my best friend for quite a while. It eased the pain while I was on it, but it would come back when I wasn't.

The other thing to keep an eye on is radiation cystitis. I had a difficult issue with that near the end of chemo/radiation.
Diagnosed with stage III rectal tumor (though probably late stage II) January 2006.
Chemo/Radiation
Full APR Surgery
Folfox Chemo
So far NED.
Oops. Liver tumor diagnosed 10/13 after elevated CEA. Liver resection for 5cm tumor 12/6/13. So far so good.
Oops again, one tumor in each lung diagnosed 8/8/16. One too small to deal with and the other resected in late September. Wait and watch for now.
Oops, another lung Met in upper left lobe on edge of previous resection scar 11/11/19.
