Chemo kicked my ass yesterday

Postby Aqx99 » Tue Aug 15, 2017 8:23 am

I had my second oxaliplatin infusion yesterday. I was hoping it would go as smoothly as the first. It did not. My neighbor dropped me off in the morning and picked me up in the afternoon. I was already feeling wonky after the infusion. I was looking forward to getting home and vegging in front of the TV. When I went to get into my neighbor's truck, I noticed too late that she had the air conditioning blasting. I had explained the cold sensitivity thing to her previously, but she must not have realized that the a/c would affect me. As soon as I got in the front seat, I could feel the throat closing feeling and started to panic. The volunteer that helps people in and out of vehicles ran inside for help and to grab a wheelchair. As he rolled me through the doors, about 5 nurses came running. They pushed me into an exam room and started to assess me. When they figured out it was a cold reaction, they got me a warm blanket and a room temperature water to drink. Luckily, the feeling subsided quickly and they let me go home. My neighbor apologized profusely and made me enough food for dinner to last several days.

Wow! That must have been VERY scary.

I haven't had that kind of sensitivit, yet. Keep a record of your side effects and try to track them. I would definitely tell your onc what happened. If it happens again, or gets worse, they can lower the dosage.

I track all my side effects and how long they last. I'm also tracking my weight, what I eat and drink. I keep a log and try to maintain a certain amount of ounces of liquid also my protein.

I find that drinking more water the day before and week of chemo helps in the severity of side effects. Also the length of time it takes for them to recede.

Only by tracking all this have I noticed a correlation. Might be coincidental?

Adding: except for my blood pressure scare. That happened on my third session.

I know how you feel! Went into anaphylactic shock on my first treatment of oxi and ended up in the ER for 3 hours. It was scary! No more oxi for me...at least you are able to continue! The cold sensitivity that was suppose to last for around 3 days turned into 14 days of torture. I could not even make my bed in the morning because if the sheets were cold, shocks went up my hand. I wore gloves 24/7.

Sorry to hear about your cold sensitivity situation, no doubt extremely scary--I too would have panicked in your situation. If it helps, I have read several others with that same scenario of their throat feeling like it was closing because of the cold sensitivity so it is not unheard of, but still scary nonetheless. I am sure your poor neighbor must have felt horrible. They probably thought they were doing you a favor having a cool car for you on a hot day, truly not getting the concept of what cold sensitivity entails. It really isn't something I think non-cancer people can fully get and to what degree it can escalate to. I had the basics when it came to the cold sensitivity, my biggest complaint was trying to drink room temperature water, blah, that just does not refresh me.

Hope today is a bit gentler on you. Hang in there. :D

A ski mask would probably help if you are going to do it in the winter. I carry a pair of those knit stretch gloves in my pocket at all times. I use them for reaching into the fridge/freezer, touching anything metal that might be cold (door handles, etc.), and most importantly for down here in NC, I wear them inside most businesses because they like to set the a/c to arctic blast. I had to stop wearing sandals for the same reason. It's socks and sneakers for me for the rest of the summer.
