Colonoscopy at 19

Postby Claire888 » Tue Aug 08, 2017 10:20 am

Hello! I'm having a colonoscopy tomorrow morning, and I'm pretty nervous  . I'm only 19, which is obviously very young for a colonoscopy, but they thought it was important given the symptoms I'm experiencing. I was just wondering if anybody has any suggestions for my prep today (Gatorade and miralax) and also if anybody has any input on how the procedure will be...again I'm pretty nervous so anything helps :) I have all the liquids for the day already: nothing red, but I have jello, white Gatorade, chicken broth, popsicles, lemonade, and cream soda.

Thank you so much :D

For me getting the prep solution down is the worst. Thus I start the procedure at noonish. I was told on my last prep, the times they list on the procedure paper are the latest they want you to start, so starting early is okay. This way I spend 20 mins getting each of those 8 oz glasses of prep solution down. Keeping a game boy or computer near the toilet is a good idea. Towards the end, you are siting on the the toilet nonstop.

Be sure to drink a lot of liquids today. Jelly is a life saver, my stomach truly feels I'm giving it food.

good luck, let us know how it goes,

Drinking the prep with a straw helps. You can bypass some of your taste buds. Like Lee said, it's a good idea to start early. Sometimes drinking less at a time helps. Some do just the opposite and have no problems-they chug it down and get it over with. If you feel like you can't keep it down, call your doctor, even if it's after hours. When I had that issue, they said to stop the prep, they would rather have me keep down what I had then try to drink more and "loose" it all. Good luck.
Went in for surgery for a cyst on my bladder, and they found colon cancer growing on the outside of the colon. Got to have two surgeries at the same time! Stage 3, one node involved.

Miralax is actually tasteless so prep shouldn’t be too hard to get down. They gave me this vile thing you dilute with water. Worst thing I have ever tasted. Are you going to be awake during the procedure? If not, you will not experience anything unpleasant during and you will wake up in recovery.

The procedure will amount to nothing more than a nice long nap. You are smart to go ahead and have this done as many young people don't heed the symptoms. Hopefully the good results you get tomorrow will allow you to rest easier and that eventually the cause of your problems will turn out to be something relatively minor.

I hope your prep and colonoscopy go well!*hugs* Keeping the prep really cold and chasing it with sips of clear liquids helps some. They give you medication in an iv right before your colonoscopy so you won't remember or feel pain.

The most important is to have a proper preparation (squeky clean colon).
In case of unsatisfactory preparation (dirty colon) some interesting stuff can be missed.

Miralax + Gatorade is the best tasting preparation.
You can start a bit earlier and drink a bit more to ensure better cleaning.

Enjoy your colonoscopy. Have fun. :)
