Lung met cryoablation tomorrow

Dear Peeps of the crc world- I am off to my cryoablation tomorrow and God willing will be NED. I had three spots done in May and one tomorrow. I am hoping to not have a another pneumothorax nor being strung up in restraints for 7 hours in a ct scanner like before. The research on cryoablation for colon cancer lung mets is really good. As a stage 4 who according to my docs should have been on the other side 10-12 months after diagnosis I am still chasing a curative outcome. Put me in prayer and positive thought please. Bob

Thank you for the thoughts and prayers. Both those posted and those held privately. The procedure went well they found two spots and this makes five done by cryoablation. Stayed overnight, chest tube was much more gentle compared to last time. One spot was close to my heart. Peace and healing to all. Thanks, Bob

What's the difference between cryoablation and RFA? Congrats on getting those suckers evicted!

Just curious if you are in the US? I ask because I too have a 4-5 lung mets and have never been offered any treatment other than standard chemo and now Erbitux. Is ablation not as well received in the US? Should I ask my Onc why it hasn't been mentioned?

Cryoablation is a freeze-thaw-freeze process, As they run you in and out of a ct scanner they can see the ice ball surround and exceed the margins of the lesion. RFA uses radio-frequency waves which generate heat. Both designed to kill the cancer cells. Cryo is the newer kid on the block and is picking up in frequency of use but still not a wide-spread option.

Yes, I am in the US. Cryoablation is a specialty of interventional radiologists. The training is unique and as such there are less of them around. I had to push my onc hard and this was after getting a thoracic surgeon second opinion, regular radiologist (SBRT) and finally a interventional radiologist opinion. I did the research and pushed my treatment plan. Cryo has a very short hospital stay, does minimal damage to lungs, and has a good success at kicking the can down the road with a possibility for cure. I had 5 areas done in two separate procedures. My onc wanted chemo for life for me-I felt it was best to reduce my tumor burden asap and shut down the mets factory. I am still on chemo and hoping that it cleans up microscopic mets. By all means, talk with your onc about this. Hope this helps. Bob
