Help Impaction or blockage!?

Postby Jon-Solo » Tue Jul 25, 2017 5:34 pm

Does anybody here know of a doctor who has endoscopicly broken up a sigmoid colon blockage or impaction? I have been trying everything to soften or break it up including mineral oil enemas, saline enemas, colace , miralax etc. it's not moving much and when it does it is causing bleeding and im worried it is going to cause a perforation. I can't find a doctor who will help me. I went to the er and they took an x ray and it showed minimal amount of stool and the sent me home. Please any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

There are other options for oral meds, infusions and enemas, but you would definitely need a doctor to implement them like
lactulose, DOSS - dioctyl sulfosuccinate

(( As a vet, I have dealt with impacted felines all the time and will sometimes use manual / instrument assisted fracture techniques.
Only once have I had to do an actual open surgery and that fecal mass was basically of concrete consistency. ))

I would urge you to access a qualified GIT specialist or ER doc.

Kids do not try this at home !

I would guess that a GI doctor would be the best person to talk to - mine does colonoscopies routinely (a bunch per week) and he would likely have the best expertise on dealing with these kinds of problems. I'm a bit surprised that enemas didn't work if you had enough fluid to get to the blockage. I can appreciate how much of a problem this is.

When you use the Miralax, does water leak out? If so, was there material as well or only water?

A standard Colonoscopy prep uses 14 packages of Miralax and two bottles of magnesium citrate and I'd think that all of that together should clean you out.

Yes - please find a GI doctor to take a serious look at this issue. Primarily this is what did my wife in. She ended up with a blockage likely due to tumor growth in we believe two places. They eventually tried a colostomy which helped a little and enabled the main blockage that had formed to break up some. However, after this surgery they could not rule out a second blockage because she was throwing up bile in great quantities and not much movement into her ostomy bag. They then put in a stomach tube so we could pump out the excess bile so she wouldn't bloat and throw up all the time. Eventually she starved and became dehydrated, as there was little ability for her to absorb nutrition or water at this point. She came home to hospice (my care) to attempt to keep her comfortable and lingered for an additional 10 days before passing away early June. Blockages are very serious. When was the last time you had a CT scan with contrast? Any sign at all this could have anything to do with a tumor or stricture of some sort?

Good luck and try and get this taken care of sooner rather than later. My wife kept saying she was fine just felt full all the time. When she finally started throwing up I guess it was too late. Damn she was a stubborn woman sometimes!
