Yup. I did some performance work for Mozilla back in the 2005-2009 timeframe and they invited me to the Mozilla 2008 Summit and sent me a bunch of T-Shirts. I wear these to the office because they are XL and cover the bag. My regular Nike Dri-Fits are too short. I have the distinction of building the first 64-bit Windows of Thunderbird and the second 64-bit Windows version of Firefox. That was back in 2005 when Windows 64-bit was more or less still a beta.

What do you work on?

Mozilla offered me a job but I didn't want to relocate to SF with kids in college. The place where I work (I have 30 years there) pays well and has great health insurance which turned out to be really helpful with this cancer.

I always feel the fatigue on day three. I think it’s me crashing off the pre-meds they give me, but I’m not sure. If you start to feel fatigued don’t try to tough it out. Get some rest!

It’s so true about people’s comments about hair. I too was ignorant about all the different types of cancer and treatments before. Now I know so much more.

I had cramps early this morning and that's likely due to drinking a lot to try to clear the body from the Oxaliplatin. The body called for it more than a mental effort on my part. So my guess is that drinking all of that water combined with the additional electrolyte consumption from the neuro-stuff going on in my body depleted electrolytes so a sandwich with a lot of salt fixed that. But I stopped at WalGreens for a box of a box of tubes with stuff similar to Pedialyte.

Then over to Target to pick up an electric kettle for my office (I might bring it home too). The benefits of the electric kettle is that it will keep water hot in my office so that I can have tea or hot water conveniently and that keeping the water hot will also warm my office. The normal temperature here is about 60-65 degrees. I could run a desktop computer with a power virus that would keep it warm but I'd have to bring one in from home (one of those old inefficient and hot computers). I have a very long walk to the kitchen (not bad for getting in steps) but it sometimes discourages me from getting fluids.

I also discovered that fresh pineapple is great for bulking up in the bag. It does require a lot of chewing though. Last night the bag wasn't watery at all which is what I've been trying to consistently achieve. I also had a cheese sandwich and macaroni and cheese.

Physically I feel great as the effects from the major surgery are fading quickly and the effects of the minor surgery have faded. The only remaining niggle is having to use my left hand to get the seatbelt. So physical symptoms are in a good place while the neuropathy stuff is something to get used to for a few days and the fatigue will set in at some point from the Xeloda. I'm glad that I had a discussion on Raynaud's with a co-worker who has it a month ago as his explanation of what he did is helpful to me.

So the challenges are there going forward. They are certainly quite different and, at this point, it seems like the chemo is easier than the surgery was. But the chemo starts off slow and gets harder while the surgery starts out very hard and gets easier. So I'm somewhat optimistic at this point.

Minor note on major cancer centers vs local hospitals.

When I had bloodwork done at Dana Farber, they had the bloodwork, including CEA done withing 30 minutes. I had it done at the local hospital yesterday and they had most of the bloodwork in 30 minutes but I'm still waiting on the CEA. The CEA isn't that important right now but I'd like to see the number vs the Dana Farber number - I expect some difference due to differences in the lab and the equipment.

Mike, how is your appetite? Any nausea? Doesn’t sound like it, which is great. I tend to lose my appetite on day 2 and it doesn’t come back for a few days. It makes the warm water even more unappetizing which makes it harder to stay hydrated. I drink herbal tea and warm Pedialyte to compensate. I work from home for a few days and have people around to make sure I am eating.

I felt ravenous this morning. No nausea. Not sure if it was the pre-meds or that it isn’t a problem for me. My metabolism is problem high from working out a lot and I have to work to not eat to much with much less physical activity than my body is used to.

I need water for my fiber supplements. I normally take it cold but will prefer warm for now. I’m tracking a set of 8 symptomsm on a daily basis so that I know how long it lasts. I’m big on metrics.

I went down to the fitness center for a 1/4 mile walk to warm my body up which was nice but then I wanted to do farmer's walks to see how much weight I could carry. So I grabbed two 15s and walked around the room. No problems. I picked up two 17.5s and walked around the room. No problems.

Except that the dumbbell handles were cold. If I feel well this afternoon, then I'll try 20s and 22.5s. Our office gym has dumbbells at 2.5 pound intervals which is very nice. It feels like my body, physically, is improving exponentially now. I might need to wear gloves for weights though.

I was able to exercise during chemo most days. If I felt okay I would exercise. Sounds like you are tolerating everything pretty well so far Mike. Good to hear.

Well, it's different to be sure.

The concern over lifting weights is the LAR and how long it would take for me to be able to lift heavy things without damaging the abs muscles or causing a hernia. I want to get back to doing planks, mountain climbers, crunches, pullups, dips, rotary torso and get the whole core area strong again. I plan to order a wrap so that I can try running but I'll order stuff after the crazy shipping season is over.

The steroids they gave me in my premeds always caused me to eat a lot. I gained 10 pounds while on chemo.

I had a lot to eat last night and it's a good thing that I wake up twice in the morning to empty the bag as it wouldn't have made it, even with 1 empty. I also had cramps again early this morning and had some electrolyte fluids but they only helped a little. I had some of the arthritis feeling in my wrists and forearms and calves and feet but I'm not sure what the cause is. I did some fast walking on the treadmill yesterday and I also did farmers walks with weights. The weights could have caused the weak feelings in my legs and arms.

I did a 50 pound bench press this morning in the gym. 50 pounds is very light for me but one of the things that I wanted to find out was if I could lift 25 pound plates with no problems and it does appear that I can do that. I also wanted to find out if the bench press would cause problems with my abs or the chest port. The chest port was fine but there's a notch in the bench around the lower back and that felt a little odd. I will do additional exercises here and there to build up confidence to figure out what I can and can't do.

I found out this morning that the fitness center manager also has Ranaud's - so that's the third person that I know of that has it. She described how she manages it.

So this Oxaliplatin has been pretty rough and I gather that most people don't get all of these symptoms after the first cycle so I'm going to ask the oncologist to drop the dosage for the second cycle. I suppose that I could get used to this or find ways to compensate. I do think that the symptoms are diminishing a little today but they are challenging, particularly at this time of the year.

I placed an order for Convatec Convex, wafers and bags, Convatec Stomahesive Powder, Cavilon Wipes and Stomahesive Paste. They have to verify with my doctors office but they will hopefully get the order in before the new year. I should have taken care of this a week ago but ordering Stoma products isn't my favorite thing to do.

I spent some more time in the gym this afternoon doing box steps, walking and the military press (50 pounds). This isn't bad but I did trip on the box while doing the box steps. I probably should use a shorter box. The ones in the office aren't that big so they're not as stable as the ones at the YMCA. I imagine that I might be a little sore again tomorrow from starting back up with easy exercises.

Mike:
Be aware that fresh pineapple is known to be problematic for individuals with an ileoatomy.

The problem with pineapple that makes it a high risk is it’s high insoluble fibrous content. The pineapple, even well chewed, is known to form a stingy bolus as it oasses through the small intestine giving rise to an obstruction. A fibrous bolus of pineapple is also prone to getting stuck as it tries to exit through the stoma (the stoma not able to expand sufficiently to allow a large wad of stringy pineapple fiber).

The same caution is also true of cocconut. And artichoke leaves. And celery stalks. And mushrooms (not otherwise finely diced).

I would not choose eating pineapple as a means of thickening your ileostomy output.

If your ileostomy output is highly liquid and of high volume and you want a means of thickening the output, I recommend using gel packets that you place in the pouch (called Diamond packets). The packets are a composed of water-attracting micro-beads. In the presence of ileostomy output, the gel packets turn liquid output into a gelatinous consistency. The packets also are a protective measure against developing wafer leaks (gelatinous output consistency is unable to undermine the wafer - which is a primary etiology of wafer leaks).

If you genuinely are hungry for pineapple, enjoy 1-2 cubes well chewed, chewed, and chewed and downed with water. Enjoy a single macaroon cookie but refrain from eating 3-4 macaroons.

Intestinal obstructions are really painful and absolutely no fun.

Wishing for you continued minimal side effects as you navigate your post surgery chemotherapy and restored health for 2018,
Karen
