Anyone having mucinous carcinoma of colon?

Postby Sara!!!! » Thu Jul 20, 2017 5:03 am

Hi I'm a newbie here and desperately need some advice? My mom was diagnosed with mucinous adenocarcinoma of colon in Dec 16 for which she underwent left hemicolectomy. At first she was diagnosed as stage 3c(10 outa 17 nodes positive) but was later upgraded to stage 4 cuz of liver spots. she has some lung nodules which are too small to be characterized and no one knows if they are actually mets or not. She's undergoing chemo (folfox +Avastin). Her mid treatment CEA dropped to 17 from 41. And scans showed just 2 lesions which were 4 before in liver. Her pet scan in may was negative. No hot spots. She just had her 10 cycle. Her CEA before the cycle is 81 and I'm freaking out about it. Does anyone else has had readings like these??

Hi Sara,

Am I correct to assume her CEA is going up? From 17 to 81. Sometimes when people are on chemo, CEA numbers can go up simply because as cancer cells are dying, they emit a protein that CEA is picking up. It happened with me when I was on chemo.

OR

Have her Dr.(s) done anything regarding her liver met? There's a possibility there may be increased activity in her liver cancer wise. Butt if her PET scan was good, I would not be too worried about activity there.

What is her Onc saying?

Thank you so much Lee for replying. Actually our doctor has been very negligent throughout treatment. This test we did ourselves. He has only checked CEA twice during treatment so we don't know wether it has directly risen from 17 in March or it rose and is going down. We'll find out next week on repeat CEA. About the PET though, I've heard it can give a false negative reading in mucinous carcinoma. So we don't know what to think. We'll get a repeat PET next month though.

Many people get a PET/CAT scan to help rule out those false negative.

Good luck,

My husbands cea doubled at one point right in the middle of his 12 hits of folfox. A pet scan was done immediately. The scan came back completely clear and when he finished chemo, his numbers slowly returned to normal. He's been clear since. Hang in there. I know it's extremely nerve racking to say the least.
