Fluid on the lung???

Postby ebv60 » Wed Jul 19, 2017 8:01 am

My wife had 1800ml( 7.5 cups) of fluid drained from her right lung. The Dr that did the procedure said the cancer was the cause for the fluid and may come back

My Question: Has anyone experienced fluid on the lungs and has the fluid came back?? If so how soon?

Thanks

I don't have any personal experience especially with the lungs, butt I am aware that people who get ascites in the stomach, yes it does tend to come back.

I found this article, maybe it might help

All the best to you and your wife,

My mom has been battling pleural effusion since last year. The fluid accumulates when the the disease grows in the pleural space. It comes back until you treat the underlying disease.

A procedure called pleurodesis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pleurodesis) may prevent its recurrence. It basically eliminates the pleural space, letting no fluid reaccumulate if successful. Unfortunately it does not always work as in my mom's case.

Alternatively you may also consider installing a pleural catheter so the fluid can be drained at home.

Good luck to you and your wife!

Just a bit more info for you :
this search will give you more insights into "pleurodesis" and what folks have been through with pleural effusions.
pleurodesis

AND a broader search for : thoracentesis / thoracocentesis /pleurocentesis
thoracentesis / thoracocentesis /pleurocentesis

I concur that having an indwelling drainage / catheter system is also a viable option, BUTT ... having placed many over the years and not actually having had one for more than a few days, I would expect / suspect that the docs may not automatically go to this as a first option for the long term.
It should still be an option though.

As to volume and timing ..... the results are very patient specific.

Best wishes

My DH had very bad pleural effusions and very badly swollen legs last year after surgery. It took two draws in early December to get the lungs clear and 2 months for the leg swelling to go down. So far, it has not returned even tho' one of the surgeons said it probably would. I stuffed him full of protein for many months with the thought that maybe his liver could process some of it and thus prevent the effusions. Fingers crossed that this will continue.

Thanks 'on all the feedback , it helps greatly

I `am a little PISS  at her cancer Doctor, she had all the symptoms of fluid on the lungs PLUS the CT scan show it TOO..at her appointments they never check her O2 level. she told them that have shortness of breath, tired and coughing a lot..
She got out of the hospital yesterday (4days in hospital) not much coughing but really weak.. the swelling is down in her feet. has an appointment next week to see what`s down the road ???I don`t think there much left for treatment? Even Clinical Trials, the cancers is has spread and growing, Hope for the best but trying to prepare what`s coming down the road as much as I came.

I chatted with a coworker yesterday (he has lung cancer). He had a lot of fluid in his lungs and it had been drained a few times and it didn't get better until he was on a targeted treatment for his lung cancer. It got a lot better and then the cancer mutated and the fluid came back. They put him on a new drug which takes care of the old cancer and the new mutation. He had a port put in so that he could drain the fluid himself and he does so every four days. Before the new medication he was getting about 500 CCs per four days and he's seeing about 250 CCs per four days now. His doctor said that he could remove the port when it gets down to 50 CCs per four days. The amount of fluid has plateaued at 250 though. It is possible that he will just have to live with this condition until we get some new medications that will cure the lung cancer completely.
