I'm not an expert on these things but I got the call, later in the day I was diagnosed, from a doc saying, "It's good news, there's no mets blah blah blah but we do want you to come in for a MRI for a spot on your liver." Scared the hell out of me. Did MRI and doc called two days later said "hemangioma, not cancerous, like we thought."

So it's now official, I am in love with FOLFOX. Mid-July scans indicated 80% regression of tumor with six cycles pre-adjuvant FOLFOX. Post-surgery biopsy upgraded its effectiveness to complete pathological response. Post-surgery chemo has been cancelled.

I was on the fence about enrolling in the PROSPECT trial but am obviously very glad I did so. I've seen at least a couple of stage 3 diagnoses recently. If you are a new stage 3 rectal patient, I highly suggest at least discussing it with your doctors. It might not be for everyone but it can have great results.

Basil, Congrats on the great response to FolFox. This is awesome and has hopefully even removed your 'low grade' worry.

All the best!

Great news because radiations suck! I wish i had folfox instead of radiations, but they might have saved my life, or at least prolong it, so i should not complain.

That is good news. It feels good to know all you're going through is working. I had rectum cancer and after chemo and radiation, my surgeon said all that was left was scar tissue and I may not need chemo after surgery. I was elated. After the surgery and 0 lymph nodes affected at my post op check, the surgeon said the pathology report indicated cancer cells that were not active and recommended chemotherapy. I was really disappointed, but after talking to the oncologist, she said I wouldn't want to wonder later what if, if there were a recurrence, and I opted not to do the chemo. Even though the chance of recurrence was low, I had 6 rounds of xelox. I decided I wanted to do all I could to avoid a recurrence and not have any regrets. I finished treatment 4/16 and I'm currently NED. Last scan showed a spot on my lung, repeat indicated no change. Dr. thinks it's scar tissue related to interstitial lung disease that may have been caused by the chemo or an auto immune disorder. Being monitored for that too, even though I have no symptoms.

Have a great day,
Susan

Brearmstrong,
I had my one year post treatment ct scan and a 4mm nodule in my lung was seen also. My oncologist and pulmonologist I have been seeing regarding scar tissue and imflammation seen in the lungs after chemo both were sure it was not mets.
Oncologist believes it's related to the scar tissue, pulmonologist says it could but also must watch to be sure it is not a new lung cancer. I had a repeat scan 3 months later and there was no change is size which is good news. Will repeat again in 6 months. Dr. says it's too small to biopsy and a pet scan would not even pick it up it's too small. So we will watch to see if any growth. Cancers usually grow quickly and Dr. says would have to at least double in size to test. But, I know how you feel even though my repeat scan showed no growth, it is always in the back of my mind. I try not to worry, I'm really starting to feel back to my old self after all the treatment. Good Luck.
