Eye Dr and dentist before chemo start (?)

Postby jep » Wed Jul 05, 2017 9:58 pm

Hello! My husband is overdo for both his eye appt and his dental check up....I suggested that he go prior to starting chemo on 7/17... he kind of blew it off, but I know he will go if I push him. How important is it to have these check ups prior to starting treatment? I've read especially about the dental appt. Thanks again for your time!

You are correct, especially the dentist. My onc would not allow me to go to the dentist for a cleaning; however, he said it was ok for the eye doctor. I went to the dentist and had my teeth cleaned and a filling changed before starting chemo. I waited one month after chemo for my next appt.

Hi Jep,

I'm on my way out but I just wanted to say that I would definitely advise your husband to have his dental checks before starting chemo. my mother had several problem with her teeth during treatments (exacerbated by the chemo) which cause problems as it delayed her treatments and generally was a nuisance. She had to start chemo so quickly she did not have time to go to the dentist before hand, it would have definetely helped.

Good luck! Veronica

Definitely have the dental work done if needed before chemo. During chemo, the immune system is low, any infection (potentially from teeth or gum) would be an issue and as the other people pointed out would delay the treatment.
