Chickspeed, I didn't have a rod with my temporary ileostomy, but I know they are used to keep the stoma from getting sucked back in. The rod is usually removed after 4–5 days when sufficient adhesion has formed between the loop of bowel and the stoma aperture to prevent retraction of the stoma.

One tip for you: Start doing Kegel exercises now to keep your anal sphincter muscles strong so they're in good shape for when your ileo is reversed.

You can do Kegel exercises while you are sitting, standing, and walking.

1. Tighten your buttock muscles like you are trying to hold back a bowel movement. Hold this position for 5 to 10 seconds.
2. Release and rest.
3. Repeat 10 times, 4 times a day.

Hope this helps!

Yes, this is very important since your sphincter muscles will be "off-line" and unused for many months. This is especially important for women who have given childbirth in the past and whose pelvic floor muscles may have also been weakened over time.
