Type of Dr

Postby Shellb » Sun Jun 25, 2017 10:59 pm

Hello,
I am glad to find your group. I had a few questions that I hope someone can give me a bit of guidance on. First I am not sure if I have colon cancer or not yet. Tuesday I had my colonoscopy and the Dr removed a growth about the size of a 50 cent piece, he said it was solid and hard to remove that he had to take it out in pieces. I asked him what his thoughts were and he said it didn't look good and was concerning but would wait for the results. The Dr is a general surgeon, he said he would just remove that section of my bowel. I want to be prepared for my appoint if it is cancer. Is a general surgeon ok or do I need to see a different type of specialist...if so what kind? I have already survived breast cancer with mastectomy and chemo. I want to make sure I take the right steps. Thank you

You should try to select a Board-Certified colorectal surgeon if at all possible.

Here are some instructions for finding a Board Certified colorectal surgeon:

How big is 50 cents coin?
Where do you live?
I am asking this question because I never saw such coin.
58 yo male at diagnosis: T1bN0M0, 0/15 nodes, low grade/moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma
03/2016 colonoscopy: 2 small polyps removed in left colon; CEA = 1.3
04/2016 colonoscopy: caecum sessile 3.5 cm polyp piecemeal removed with kind of clear margins
05/2016 "prophylactic" laparoscopic right hemicolectomy - bleeding, leak, infection
06/2017 CT scan, colonoscopy OK; CEA = 1.6
A lot of funny stuff discovered by CT scans in liver, kidney, lungs, arteries, gallbladder, lymph node, pancreas

Good morning,
Thank you all for your responses. I have not used 'this type of forum before so I guess I reply to everyone at one time. Thank you for the link to find the correct Dr. I am from Ohio, USA. A .50 cent piece is probably double the size of a US quarter. Hopefully I will be fairly prepared for my appointment this week...getting my list of questions ready. Thanks again!

I second the colorectal surgeon. All they do is various kinds of colon and rectal surgery and thus they are more experienced than any general surgeon, no matter how good. Also, in the future you might consider having a gastroenterologist do your scope.

Wishing you the best.
Betsy

lap sigmoid colectomy, 6/05
