Male diagnosed with stage 4 rectal + mets to lung on 11th July 2007 at age 60.
Radiation, chemo, surgery, more chemo, more surgery etc from Aug 2007 to October 2009.
Low anterior resection and colonic J-pouch, and a left lower lobectomy, as well as miscellaneous other surgical procedures.
No longer any evidence of cancer.
If you and your husband are not happy with your doctors, then by all means get a 2nd opinion.
I had complete faith in my oncologists, gastroenterologists and surgeons, and I feel that this is important,
so I sincerely hope that you find specialists that you trust fully.
Your husband is more than 30 years younger that I was when I received my cancer treatment, and
while he is physically stronger than I was as a 60 year old patient, it is important that he remains
mentally strong for as long as possible.
We all have different levels of endurance and strength, and you both should seize every form of support that
you can find. Your support will fortify him.
I am not as “cancer smart” as many others on this website, but all throughout my treatment:
1. I did as I was told by my doctors.
2. I completed the treatments even though I needed drugs to help me get through them when the going got tough.
3. I tried to be a good patient when in hospitals. (The pathetic behavior of some younger male patients shocked me.)
4. I trusted my doctors completely, and never questioned them once I had committed myself to their treatment.
This worked for me. I am 70 years old now, and I am reasonably active in spite of all the after effects of cancer.
I am not as knowledgeable as others on this website, so I agree that more details of your husband’s treatment
to date will help others give you much better advice than I can give.
Please forgive me if I appear unemotional about your situation, but please believe me when I say that I understand
the pain and anguish that you are going through.
Wish your husband good luck from me,
Taexali
